{"id":139254,"date":"2025-10-22T22:54:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/139254\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T22:54:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:54:51","slug":"india-u-s-near-trade-deal-with-major-tariff-cuts-reduced-russian-oil-purchases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/139254\/","title":{"rendered":"India, U.S. near trade deal with major tariff cuts, reduced Russian oil purchases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Donald Trump meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, on Feb. 13, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Watson | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. could substantially slash tariffs on Indian exports as the two countries near a trade deal that could see New Delhi cutting oil purchases from Russia, Indian media outlet Mint reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the trade deal, Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/india-us-trade-deal-likely-soon-huge-tariff-cuts-on-the-horizon-11761046733288.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">could slash tariffs<\/a> on Indian exports to 15%-16% from the current 50%, Mint reported citing three unnamed sources aware of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>India is also considering raising its import quota for non-genetically modified corn from the U.S. \u2014 currently 0.5 million tonnes annually \u2014 even with a import duty of 15%, while pushing for a mechanism under which both sides can revisit tariffs and market access over time, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had received assurance from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a phone call that New Delhi would scale back purchases of Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do. He wants to see the war end with Russia, Ukraine, and as you know, they&#8217;re not going to be buying too much oil,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/trump-vows-keep-massive-tariffs-india-until-russian-oil-imports-cease-2025-10-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trump told reporters abroad Air Force One<\/a>, while threatening that New Delhi would keep paying &#8220;massive&#8221; tariffs if it did not do so.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X on Wednesday morning local time, Modi confirmed the phone call with Trump, adding that he hoped the two countries continue to &#8220;stand united against terrorism in all its forms,&#8221; without mentioning India&#8217;s stance on Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p>Trump last week also said that Modi in a call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/16\/trump-says-india-will-stop-buying-russian-oil-ukraine-war-crude-china-putin-modi.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had agreed to cut Russian oil purchases<\/a>. India&#8217;s foreign ministry spokesperson said the following day that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mea.gov.in\/media-briefings.htm?dtl\/40219\/Transcript_of_Weekly_Media_Briefing_by_the_Official_Spokesperson_October_16_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not aware of any call between Trump and Modi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the question of cutting oil imports from Russia, the spokesperson said Thursday, &#8220;India is a significant importer of oil and gas. It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Strategic flashpoint<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/108213204-17606410691760641063-42127267368-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Key to getting Russia to deal table is squeezing revenues via India, says Rapidan's Bob McNally\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-India relations further soured when Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing last month, in a move seen as a signal to Trump of India&#8217;s willingness to boost rather than cut ties with Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>India has become the world&#8217;s second largest buyer of Russian crude, trailing China, since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, importing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/21\/trump-us-policy-china-india-russia.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1.6 million barrels per day<\/a> in the first half of this year, up from 50,000 bpd in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/10\/trump-and-modi-strike-conciliatory-tone-voice-optimism-on-us-india-trade-talks.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">softened his rhetoric<\/a>, expressing optimism about the ongoing negotiations and reiterating on Tuesday that Modi was a <a href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/news\/economy\/foreign-trade\/held-discussions-with-great-friend-pm-modi-on-trade-says-trump-as-he-extends-diwali-wishes-to-india\/articleshow\/124731563.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;great friend.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The finalization of the trade agreement will likely be communicated to Trump and Modi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myasean2025.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">at the ASEAN summit<\/a> later this month, though neither Trump nor Modi has officially confirmed their attendance for the event, Mint reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The broad contours of the agreement are in place, but sensitive areas such as agriculture and energy need political clearance before the deal can be announced,&#8221;
