{"id":139898,"date":"2025-10-23T06:11:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T06:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/139898\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T06:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T06:11:13","slug":"colaiste-choilm-respond-well-to-open-with-victory-over-skibbereen-cs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/139898\/","title":{"rendered":"Col\u00e1iste Choilm respond well to open with victory over Skibbereen CS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">\n<p>                Col\u00e1iste Choilm 1-15<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<p>                Skibbereen CS 0-12<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A strong fourth quarter gave Col\u00e1iste Choilm the honours in TUS Corn U\u00ed Mhuir\u00ed opener against Skibbereen CS at Enniskeane on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, while the Ballincollig outfit &#8211; without the injured Danny Miskella &#8211; held a commanding, and deserved, 0-8 to 0-2 lead as half-time approached and won by the same six-point margin, in between they had to contend with a spirited Skibb fightback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A two-point free from Dan McCarthy helped to make the west Cork school\u2019s deficit a bit more manageable going in at half-time and they got on top around the middle on the resumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Good work from Will O\u2019Donovan and Niall O\u2019Callaghan gave Kevin O\u2019Donovan an opening for a nice point and then a lovely move involving Kevin O\u2019Donovan, McCarthy and James Goulding led to the ball being worked to Luke O\u2019Sullivan, whose shot was perhaps slightly unlucky to fly just over the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When a good turnover led to a free, McCarthy again did the needful and another from Kevin O\u2019Donovan had them level on 43 minutes. Picture: Larry Cummins<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ahern and Se\u00e1n Murphy (free) gave Col\u00e1iste Choilm daylight again and, while McCarthy was unfortunate to see a Skibb free come back off the post, the counter-attack was swift and ruthless, ending with Luke O\u2019Mahony setting up Cathal Murphy for a goal and a six-point advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Twice they led by seven in the closing stages, and Peter Rose and Cian O\u2019Connor led a defence that never looked like conceding a goal. A late orange flag from Skibb\u2019s Paddy Collins ensured they were not left for dead and may yet prove useful in the final table after clashes with St Brendan\u2019s College of Killarney and another west Cork side, Clonakilty CC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Certainly, Skibb will know that they can\u2019t spot teams big first-half leads &#8211; especially as Col\u00e1iste Choilm could have amassed an even bigger advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cathal Murphy almost had a second-minute goal for Col\u00e1iste Choilm, his shot coming back off the post and only a great save by Adam Limerick denied Brendan Delaney following a lovely pass by Colm Herlihy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">That led to a 45, stroked over by O\u2019Mahony &#8211; son of Podsie &#8211; to make it 0-3 to 0-1 and they were 0-6 to 0-2 in front coming up to half-time following a superb two-pointer from the same player.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4830744_6_articleinlinemobile_DSC_3505.jpeg\" alt=\" Brian Cronin of Col\u00e1iste Choilm looks to offload, with Will O'Donovan of Skibbereen CS in close company.
