He has brown eyes \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Pacemaker Press<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Paisley said the King should abdicate if he prays with the Pope, as he would not be &#8220;being true to his oath&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">King Charles should abdicate if he goes ahead with plans to pray with Pope Leo XIV during a church service in Rome, a reverend and son of Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) founder Ian Paisley has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Reverend Kyle Paisley said the King would not be &#8220;true to his oath&#8221;, in which he vowed to uphold the Protestant faith, if he joined the Pope in prayer at the event in the Vatican&#8217;s Sistine Chapel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The King would become the first reigning English monarch to pray publicly with a pope since Henry VIII.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The service, on 22 and 23 October, will bring together members from both the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England, of which the King is supreme governor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761138308_954_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0a782f20-ab4f-11f0-b2a1-6f537f66f9aa.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Getty Images Composite image of Pope Leo, in a pose of prayer with hands clasped while wearing green and white vestments, and King Charles standing in a dark blue suit, white shirt and dark tie\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV and King Charles are due to pray together at a church service in Rome<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m002l3qz\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster&#8217;s Talkback programme on Wednesday<\/a>, Mr Paisley said the King should &#8220;uphold the protestant faith&#8221; and in praying with the Pope he is &#8220;breaking his oath&#8221; and &#8220;not upholding his promise to defend a reformed faith when he mixes in that kind of way&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">When asked if he thinks the King should abdicate if he goes ahead with the visit, he replied: &#8220;Yes, because I don&#8217;t think he is being true to his oath.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The Protestant faith historically and theologically is a world apart from Catholicism,&#8221; added Mr Paisley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t for the life of me see how he can engage in that kind of corporate worship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It gives the impression that it&#8217;s not essentially different,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The visit will be seen as an important symbol of reconciliation, in a trip that will also see the first meeting between the King and the new US-born Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The King and Queen will meet the Pope and senior Vatican officials and there will be a special ecumenical service, bringing together Catholic and Anglican traditions, which will see the King and Pope praying together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The service in the Sistine Chapel will be focused on protecting nature, in recognition of the King&#8217;s enthusiastic support of environmental causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It also aims to show harmony between the two religious denominations, with the Sistine Chapel Choir singing alongside the Choir of St George&#8217;s Chapel and the Choir of His Majesty&#8217;s Chapel Royal.<\/p>\n<p>The Paisleys and the Pope<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761138308_954_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/f403d090-af5f-11f0-b932-d752a474c44a.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Getty Images A black and white image of a crowd of protesters. The other says 'Jesus saves Rome enslaves'. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Reverend Ian Paisley singing during a demonstration in 1970 outside Canterbury Cathedral against the first Roman Catholic Mass to be held there for 400 years<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mr Paisley&#8217;s father, Ian Paisley, was a former Northern Ireland first minister who founded the DUP, now Northern Ireland&#8217;s largest unionist party, in 1971.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">However, before his career in politics was his life in religion &#8211; he became a religious minister as a young man and went on to found the Free Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Along with fiery sermons, Ian Paisley became known for his opposition to Catholicism and the Pope. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">To mark the death of Pope John XXIII in 1963, he said: &#8220;This Romish man of sin is now in hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mr Paisley also protested against Pope John Paul II in 1988, when the Roman Catholic leader was giving an address at the European Parliament. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He interrupted the address, saying: &#8220;I denounce you, antichrist.
