{"id":140743,"date":"2025-10-23T14:51:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T14:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/140743\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T14:51:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T14:51:08","slug":"pharmacies-must-display-clear-information-about-cost-of-services-from-december-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/140743\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacies must display clear information about cost of services from December \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Pharmacies will be required to display clear information about the cost of their services from December, under new guidance issued by the regulator. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In April, Minister for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/\">Health<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> announced that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pharmaceutical-society-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pharmaceutical-society-of-ireland\/\">Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland<\/a> \u2013 the pharmacy regulator \u2013 will develop new guidelines on the transparency of pricing in respect of services provided by pharmacies \u2013 including dispensing fees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">On Thursday, the organisation published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.ie\/practice-supports\/guidance-and-guidelines-pharmacists-and-pharmacies\/guidance-support-price-transparency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.psi.ie\/practice-supports\/guidance-and-guidelines-pharmacists-and-pharmacies\/guidance-support-price-transparency\">its guidance<\/a>, which contained two key recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">From December 1st, pharmacies will be required to display information about the cost of all professional services on a clear notice in a conspicuous location, visible to patients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">From January, patients will receive a detailed receipt for any transaction, outlining the costs of the medicine, dispensing fee (where applicable) and the cost of any other professional service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new guidance comes following lengthy negotiations between the department and the sector earlier this year over the provision of free hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat symptoms of menopause. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The scheme was supposed to be introduced last January but was only introduced in June, with the department internally stating that the delay was related to a reluctance on the part of pharmacists to disclose how much they charge as a professional fee for their services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was in light of this that the Minister announced the regulator had been asked to develop these guidelines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/05\/16\/free-hrt-widely-available-in-pharmacies-from-june-after-agreement-reached-with-department-of-health\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Free HRT widely available in pharmacies from June after agreement reached with Department of HealthOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joanne Kissane, registrar of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), said pricing information is \u201cessential to empower individuals to make informed healthcare decisions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile we do not determine the prices charged by pharmacies, patients have a right to transparent and accurate information on the price of the medicines and health services they access,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTransparency of fees and pricing maintains and enhances public confidence in pharmacists and enables patients to make informed decisions about their health and treatment.
