Having had 15 seconds of social media hyper-fame on the back of his appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/09\/24\/traitors-ireland-poetic-justice-say-the-winners-but-will-show-return-to-rte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/09\/24\/traitors-ireland-poetic-justice-say-the-winners-but-will-show-return-to-rte\/\">The Traitors Ireland<\/a>, retired prison officer Paudie Moloney is back on the airwaves as a new cast member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gogglebox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gogglebox\/\">Gogglebox Ireland<\/a> (Virgin Media One, 9pm) alongside his son (and fellow Traitors contestant) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/09\/16\/the-traitors-cut-loose-paudies-son-andrew-lifts-lid-on-hug-gate-he-was-being-pure-cute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/09\/16\/the-traitors-cut-loose-paudies-son-andrew-lifts-lid-on-hug-gate-he-was-being-pure-cute\/\">Andrew<\/a> and daughter Aoife. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Moloney is from Kilmallock in Limerick, but his contribution to Gogglebox is filmed in Ovens, Co Cork, at the home of a family member. This has nothing to do with his Traitors\u2019 celebrity but instead with the fact that he worked as a prison officer for 30 years and would prefer that details of his place of residence not be beamed to the nation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Paudie, Aoife and Andrew make for an endearing everyday triumvirate of 60-something father and grown-up kids. They start by addressing the controversy over Andrew referring to his pater as \u201cdaddy\u201d on The Traitors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI didn\u2019t realise how divisive it would be lads,\u201d he says. \u201cA man of 33 years.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Paudie, however, doesn\u2019t think his son has anything to be embarrassed about. \u201cI called my father daddy all my life,\u201d he says. \u201cThe Dubs wouldn\u2019t understand. It\u2019s \u2018ma\u2019 and \u2018da\u2019 except in Dublin 4, where it\u2019s \u2018mum\u2019 and \u2018dad\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aoife concurs: \u201cWe\u2019re all mammy and daddy in the rest of Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Gogglebox was a big hit in the UK, where it launched on Channel 4 in 2013 \u2013 spawning spin-offs and the inevitable celebrity editions (featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liam-gallagher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liam-gallagher\/\">Liam Gallagher<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeremy-corbyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeremy-corbyn\/\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a>, etc) and making a star of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/scarlett-moffatt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/scarlett-moffatt\/\">Scarlett Moffatt<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The concept is that instead of watching television, we watch average families watching television. Alas, the Irish edition comes with an aura of Marmite \u2013 there is a degree of swearing (though nothing like Traitors Ireland). For some reason, Virgin Media is more of the opinion that Irish people sit down to watch nothing but British telly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/09\/17\/the-traitors-craic-wit-and-wolfhounds-has-restored-my-pride-in-ireland\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Traitors craic, wit and wolfhounds has restored my pride in IrelandOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">This week, the fare includes news bulletins about Prince Andrew being stripped of his Royal Titles and a Channel 4 documentary about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a>. There is some Irish stuff \u2013 several families are agape at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/10\/13\/made-of-stone-review-one-mans-quest-to-revive-ancient-celtic-feat-of-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/10\/13\/made-of-stone-review-one-mans-quest-to-revive-ancient-celtic-feat-of-strength\/\">documentary Made of Stone<\/a>, about a middle-aged influencer from Waterford seeking to revive the ancient Irish practice of stone lifting. \u201cIt\u2019s cute when older men and women find their niche,\u201d says Kayleigh from Dublin. \u201cHe\u2019s going around finding stones.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There is also much incredulity at Channel 4\u2019s Will AI Take My Job? \u2013 fronted by a computer-generated presenter and featuring a segment in which an AI GP meets patients. \u201cI remember when I had to drop my pants for the first time for a doctor. It was the most uncomfortable moment in my life,\u201d says David from Dundalk, Co Louth. His couch companion, Sarah, is unimpressed. \u201cWhat do you think a robot is going to do?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Over 10 years the Gogglebox format has become staid, raising the question of whether random members of the public monologuing about ITV quizshows is really the entertainment we need in our lives. But the Moloneys enjoy their further adventures in light entertainment.
