The background behind her is a billboard with white writing on a black  background.  \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of babies in Belfast will receive 60 free books over five years from Dolly Parton&#8217;s Imagination Library<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She&#8217;s one of the world&#8217;s biggest music stars, best known for a decades-long run of hits and a storied career on screen and stage &#8211; but, for dozens of babies in Belfast, Dolly Parton is about to become a major figure in their reading life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Belfast City Council has teamed up with the star&#8217;s Dollywood Foundation to give free books to 75 babies registered at Belfast City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Each child will receive 60 books in total, one free book per month until they turn five.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mark McBride&#8217;s baby daughter Maria is one of the 75 children receiving books from the programme. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761138308_954_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/af48f860-b007-11f0-8f34-995d899817c0.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Mark McBride and his family are playing with a ball pit. The background is a busy room with blue carpet and wooden walls. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mark McBride and his family at Belfast City Hall <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He attended a special event at Belfast City Hall on Thursday morning to mark its start. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He said his wife found out about the scheme online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We thought it would be a great opportunity for kids to get a head start,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We got the application in as soon as possible.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mark said reading to their kids is normal for his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We have an older child too, we&#8217;ve been reading with him all the time, he loves it and I&#8217;m sure she will too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Imagination Library is a reading scheme first launched in Tennessee where Parton grew up and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Elected members agreed to fund the pilot extension of the Imagination Library in Belfast, following a notice of motion from Councillor S\u00e9amas De Faoite almost three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing more important than &#8216;reading and bonding with your child&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761138308_954_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/95b93d10-b007-11f0-8f34-995d899817c0.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Tracy Kelly is wearing a green and black shirt. It also has a blue carpet. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Belfast Lord Mayor Tracy Kelly said she hoped the scheme could expand across Northern Ireland<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Belfast&#8217;s Lord Mayor Tracy Kelly, who hosted the event, said she was delighted that the scheme had come to Belfast. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing more important than reading and bonding with your child,&#8221; Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The DUP councillor said she would like to see the pilot &#8220;expanded right across Northern Ireland&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Kelly added she cannot imagine that &#8220;any rate payer in Northern Ireland would be unhappy with children getting books when they&#8217;re getting registered in Belfast City Council&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m sure many parents in Northern Ireland have read to their children and do see the benefit of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m a huge fan of Dolly&#8217; <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761138308_954_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/5be0a460-b026-11f0-a375-75de819286d1.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Getty ARLINGTON, TEXAS - NOVEMBER 23: Dolly Parton performs at halftime during the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders at AT&amp;T Stadium on November 23, 2023 in Arlington, Texas.
