The special hardcover edition of the seminal LGBTQ+ coming of age memoir includes commentary by Kobabe as well as other comic creators and scholars. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor fans, educators, and anyone else who wants to know more, I am so excited to share \u2018Gender Queer: The Annotated Edition,\u2019\u201d Kobabe said in the news release. \u201cQueer and trans cartoonists, comics scholars, and multiple people who appear in the book as characters contributed their thoughts, reactions, and notes to this new edition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new 280-page hardcover will feature \u201ccomments on the color design process, on comics craft, on family, on friendship, on the touchstone queer media that inspired me and countless other people searching for meaningful representation, and on the complicated process of self-discovery,\u201d the author added. <\/p>\n<p>Released in 2019, \u201cGender Queer\u201d follows Kobabe, who uses e\/em\/eir pronouns, from childhood into eir young adult years as e navigates gender and sexuality and eir understanding of who e is. It\u2019s weird to grow up and be 25 before you meet someone who is like the same gender as you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the publication of \u201cGender Queer,\u201d the political climate has been increasingly <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/story\/2025-10-20\/lgbtq-youths-mental-health-struggles-have-increased-in-the-last-two-years-according-to-a-new-survey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hostile to the LGBTQ+ community<\/a>. Right-wing activists and politicians have <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2022-03-29\/experts-worry-dont-say-gay-bills-promote-hate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed for legislation<\/a> to restrict <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2025-09-21\/democrat-republican-lgbtq-americans-running-for-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">queer and trans rights<\/a>, including how sexual orientation and gender identity can be addressed in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2023-04-19\/florida-expands-dont-say-gay-through-12th-grade-while-house-oks-anti-lgbtq-bills\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">classrooms<\/a>. Caught in the crossfire of this <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-10-15\/how-a-raging-battle-over-lgbtq-issues-in-southern-california-schools-erupted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conservative, anti-LGBTQ+ culture war<\/a>, \u201cGender Queer\u201d has become one of the most <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/bbooks\/frequentlychallengedbooks\/top10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">challenged<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2022-09-25\/gender-queer-most-banned-book\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned books<\/a> in the United States. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to commentary by Kobabe, \u201cGender Queer: The Annotated Edition\u201d will feature comments from fellow artists and comics creatives Jadzia Axelrod, Ashley R. Guillory, Justin Hall, Kori Michele Handwerker, Phoebe Kobabe, Hal Schrieve, Rani Som, Shannon Watters and Andrea Colvin.
