{"id":142138,"date":"2025-10-24T06:05:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T06:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/142138\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T06:05:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T06:05:11","slug":"united-ireland-would-pose-threat-to-britain-from-russia-says-ex-nato-commander-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/142138\/","title":{"rendered":"United Ireland would pose threat to Britain from Russia, says ex-Nato commander \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A former senior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\">Nato<\/a> commander and naval expert has told Westminster politicians that a united Ireland would pose a strategic threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The loss of the protection afforded by the North would deepen the threat to Britain from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\">China<\/a>, Rear Admiral Chris Parry told MPs and members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/house-of-lords\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/house-of-lords\/\">House of Lords<\/a> in a briefing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Parry, a Falklands War veteran, also said he believed Chinese warships and submarines would soon be active in Irish waters alongside the Russian vessels that had been operating there in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He told parliamentarians that Nato should counter the threat from Moscow and Beijing by holding naval exercises in Irish-controlled waters, whether Dublin agreed or not. He also urged the Republic of Ireland to back military co-operation with Nato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI would say to the good people of Ireland: you\u2019ve been independent for more than 100 years. Stop blaming the Brits. We have shared interests here,\u201d he said at the meeting in a committee room above the House of Lords on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf anyone attacks Britain, they will attack Ireland. It is as simple as that. Neutrality cannot be seen as conscientious objection any more. If you are part of the free world, you have to be prepared to defend it. The Republic needs to reduce its vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Parry told peers and MPs how Irish people should \u201cforget the history\u201d with Britain because their shared future suggested they should co-operate militarily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWould I want Ireland on our side in a war with Russia? Yes. There is an immense amount of talent in the Republic that is not being exploited. They fight really well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The former military man was speaking at a briefing organised by the pro-union think tank, the Together UK Foundation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Prominent among the attendees were unionist politicians, including the DUP MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sammy-wilson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sammy-wilson\/\">Sammy Wilson<\/a> and the former MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-dodds\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nigel-dodds\/\">Nigel Dodds<\/a>, who is now a member of the Lords. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The event was hosted by Paul Bew, an academic from the North who is also a life peer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Parry, who has worked as a military consultant since 2008, told the politicians the Republic was \u201cstrategically irrelevant as long as the UK maintains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a>\u201d, giving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/a> a base to police North Sea waters on approach routes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/scotland\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/scotland\">Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the Republic was relevant now only in the sense that it had \u201cvulnerabilities\u201d that could be exploited by Russia and China in any conflict with the West. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Parry mentioned the threat to undersea communication cables in Irish waters, as well as the likelihood, he said, that Russia or China could launch missiles at Britain from off Ireland\u2019s west coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe basic problem is that the Republic is incapable of policing its own economic zone,\u201d he said, referring to the waters extending up to 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) off the coast in which the State has exclusive rights to manage from an economic perspective, but through which the vessels of other nations can legally transit under international maritime law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere are things going on in those waters that they don\u2019t know about,\u201d said Mr Parry, who warned that undersea cables could be \u201cpicked apart\u201d by Russian submarines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland becomes very important strategically if Northern Ireland is absorbed into the Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the North Channel, the strait between Northern Ireland and Scotland, was critical to Britain\u2019s deployment of its \u201cstrategic deterrent\u201d of missile-bearing submarines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWith a united Ireland, there is no guarantee we could deploy our ballistic missiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He said Russia already possessed some conventional missiles that could \u201cdevastate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\">Galway<\/a> up to 4km inland\u201d and that Ireland \u201cin its current form would not be tolerated\u201d by Russia and China in a war with the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe UK needs to calibrate the threat to itself of a supine Republic of Ireland. My view is that the best way to help Ireland now is to increase Nato and Allied activity in Ireland\u2019s economic zone waters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to start fishing in Irish waters for our potential opponents.
