{"id":142648,"date":"2025-10-24T11:50:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T11:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/142648\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T11:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T11:50:15","slug":"doshi-retreat-snakes-through-vitra-campus-in-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/142648\/","title":{"rendered":"Doshi Retreat snakes through Vitra Campus in Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last building designed by the late Indian architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/balkrishna-doshi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Balkrishna Doshi<\/a> has reached completion at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vitra-campus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Vitra Campus<\/a> in Germany, with a snake-like form crafted from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/weathering-steel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weathered steel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named Doshi Retreat, the structure offers a space for solitude and contemplation at furniture brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitra.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vitra<\/a>&#8216;s iconic base in Weil am Rhein, on a plot adjacent to the concrete Conference Pavilion by Japanese architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/tadao-ando\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tadao Ando<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261812\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus by Balkrishna Doshi and Studio Sangarth\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Doshi Retreat has opened at the Vitra Campus in Germany<\/p>\n<p>While being Doshi&#8217;s last-ever design, Doshi Retreat is also the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner&#8217;s first-ever project to have been completed outside of India.<\/p>\n<p>It was developed in collaboration with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and her partner S\u00f6nke Hoof, who are the founders of Indian architecture practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiosangath.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Sangath<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1209.jpg\" alt=\"Weathered-steel pavilion\" width=\"1666\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It is the last building designed by Balkrishna Doshi. Photo by Daisuke Hirabayashi<\/p>\n<p>Doshi Retreat comprises two interwoven pathways, which descend below ground level as they cross over each other and guide visitors towards a pavilion, described by the team as &#8220;a contemplation chamber&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This winding design evolved from a sketch based on a dream that Doshi had about two intertwining cobras.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus by Balkrishna Doshi and Studio Sangarth\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Doshi Retreat sits next to a conference centre by Tadao Ando<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we realised is that the retreat cannot be a place which you just enter into, it has to be a place that you arrive at,&#8221; Khushnu Panthaki Hoof told Dezeen during a tour of the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We showed Doshi five different pathway iterations, and one of them had somewhat intertwined paths, and he came and he stood at it and kept looking at it, and said &#8216;this reminds me of a dream I had in my ancestral home of these intertwined serpents&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In that instance, somehow intuitively, we all knew that something had resonated and the path had kind of revealed itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261807 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x566.jpg\" alt=\"Weathered-steel pavilion\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1570\"  \/>The pavilion is crafted from weathering steel<\/p>\n<p>The walls of the sunken pathways and the sculptural pavilion are all crafted from weathered steel, which was made from a high proportion of scrap steel and donated by the manufacturer, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.arcelormittal.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ArcelorMittal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00f6nke Hoof said weathering steel was partly chosen for its aesthetic quality that changes with the weather, making it &#8220;feel alive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x566.jpg\" alt=\"Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus by Balkrishna Doshi and Studio Sangarth\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1570\"  \/>It is accessed by winding pathways that are sunken in the ground<\/p>\n<p>Accessed through a short, arched tunnel, the pavilion contains a large gong and two semicircular stone benches. They are partially sheltered by a hand-hammered brass mandala crafted by artisans in India.<\/p>\n<p>A gap around the mandala allows rainwater to enter, which is collected by a basin that encircles the pavilion, forming a dynamic backdrop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261825 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x566.jpg\" alt=\"\" contemplation=\"\" chamber=\"\" by=\"\" balkrishna=\"\" doshi=\"\" and=\"\" studio=\"\" sangarth=\"\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1570\"  \/>The pathways lead to a &#8220;contemplation chamber&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While referencing snakes, Doshi Retreat also draws on Kundalini \u2013 an ancient Sanskrit term that refers to primal energy at the base of the spine, conceptualised as a coil or spiral.<\/p>\n<p>As visitors move along the route, they pass raised areas built around trees, while an audio system embedded in the ground plays the sounds of gongs and flutes.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/06\/26\/marina-tabassum-khudi-bari-vitra-campus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/khudi-bari-vitra-campus-architecture-marina-tabassum_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Khudi Bari by Marina Tabassum\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Marina Tabassum installs bamboo Khudi Bari house at Vitra Campus\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Doshi was asked to design the project in 2020 by Vitra&#8217;s chairman emeritus Rolf Fehlbaum, who is the mastermind behind the architectural landscape of the Vitra Campus.<\/p>\n<p>Fehlbaum had visited a small shrine at the Modhera Sun Temple in India and wanted a space that could emulate the same feeling of solitude and contemplation he felt there.<\/p>\n<p>During a preview of the building, Fehlbaum said space for reflection was important amid an era of growing global instability.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2261830 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-julien-lanoo_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Stone bench\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Rainwater basins encircle the room<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A tranquil counterpoint, a place of contemplation, felt timely,&#8221; Fehlbaum explained. &#8220;Confrontation, polarisation, war and authoritarianism have become increasingly prevalent. So in this climate, we felt that a place representing Doshi&#8217;s values feels even more appropriate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His world was one of humility, generosity, humour and reconciliation,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We&#8217;re happy to have his presence on the campus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-marek-iwicki_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus by Balkrishna Doshi and Studio Sangarth\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1330\"  \/>The pavilion offers a space for contemplation on the campus. Photo by Marek Iwicki<\/p>\n<p>Doshi Retreat joins several landmark buildings by well-known architects on the campus. Among its most iconic structures is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2022\/05\/24\/vitra-fire-station-zaha-hadid-deconstructivism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zaha Hadid&#8217;s Vitra Fire Station<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/frank-gehry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frank Gehry<\/a>&#8216;s Vitra Design Museum and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/herzog-de-meuron\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Herzog &amp; de Meuron<\/a>&#8216;s VitraHaus \u2013 the campus&#8217;s flagship store.<\/p>\n<p>Doshi&#8217;s design is on a site alongside Ando&#8217;s conference hall, chosen for its distance from the rest of the campus buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to make an effort to come here,&#8221; said Khushnu Panthaki Hoof. &#8220;You just don&#8217;t walk into it. You have to consciously think that you&#8217;re walking. You have to make an effort to arrive there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fehlbaum said this builds on Ando&#8217;s idea of creating a part of a campus you have to make an effort to get to for his conference centre, so &#8220;your mind gets free&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2261840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/doshi-retreat-vitra-campus-architecture-pavilion-marek-iwicki_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x567.jpg\" alt=\"Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus by Balkrishna Doshi and Studio Sangarth\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1573\"  \/>Weathering steel was chosen for its ever-changing look.
