{"id":143023,"date":"2025-10-24T15:49:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T15:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/143023\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T15:49:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T15:49:08","slug":"carrick-on-shannon-in-co-leitrim-named-tidy-towns-winner-for-2025-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/143023\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim named Tidy Towns winner for 2025 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carrick-on-shannon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/carrick-on-shannon\/\">Carrick-on-Shannon<\/a> in Co Leitrim has been named the overall winner of the 2025 SuperValu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tidy-towns\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tidy-towns\/\">TidyTowns<\/a> Competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The award ceremony took place in Croke Park on Friday with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marty-morrissey\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/marty-morrissey\/\">Marty Morrissey<\/a>, RT\u00c9 sports broadcaster, hosting the event and Minister for Rural and Community Development <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dara-calleary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dara-calleary\/\">Dara Calleary<\/a> handing out awards to winners across several categories. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There were more than 600 volunteers from across the country present at the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">John Gaffey, chairman of the Carrick-on-Shannon committee, said it was a \u201creally close-knit club who takes care of each other\u201d and thanked the Ukrainian volunteers who had joined and made the group much larger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said Carrick-on-Shannon had been entering the competition for more than 40 year and that those in the town made \u201ca real effort\u201d to make it \u201cas nice as we can\u201d and that it was \u201ca really lovely place to live\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ireland\u2019s tidiest small town award also went to Carrick-on-Shannon, which was hailed for its large volunteer base and breadth of ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The award for Ireland\u2019s tidiest village went to Rosscarbery, Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a>, which has been entering the competition for 48 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ireland\u2019s tidiest large town award went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dalkey\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dalkey\">Dalkey<\/a>, Co Dublin, which was noted for the historical significance of its architecture and how that has been maintained by owners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Gaeltacht Award went to Carraig Airt, Co Donegal. The Young Persons in TidyTowns award went to Corofin, Co Clare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ireland\u2019s tidiest large urban centre award went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tralee\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tralee\">Tralee<\/a>, Co Kerry, which was praised for its interesting streetscape, reflecting its varied and lengthy history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Calleary on Friday announced a further \u20ac1.5 million in funding for Tidy Towns groups across the country next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">All groups who entered the competition in 2023, last year or this year will be eligible to apply for a grant of \u20ac1,000 to \u20ac4,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The competition is organised by Mr Calleary\u2019s department and has been running since 1958. A total of 929 towns participated in the competition this year, the highest number of entries ever received.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">About 30,000 volunteers took part in these projects over 2025, representing \u20ac35 million in economic value. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Each year more than 220 prizes are awarded, with around \u20ac270,000 in main awards and \u20ac70,000 in special prizes given out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Luke Hanlon, managing director of SuperValu, commended the \u201ccommitment and quiet determination\u201d of the many volunteers involved in the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThese are not just projects, they are legacies with real impacts and they will last longer than us,\u201d Mr Hanlon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Calleary praised the commitment of two volunteers, Hugh Kelly and Michael Tuohy from Riverside, Co Sligo, who first started volunteering in 1967.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cPeople like Hugh, people like Michael, have embedded pride, responsibility and passion into their local area,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim has been named the overall winner of the 2025 SuperValu TidyTowns Competition.
