{"id":143284,"date":"2025-10-24T18:48:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T18:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/143284\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T18:48:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T18:48:11","slug":"ancient-microbes-brought-back-to-life-after-40000-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/143284\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Microbes \u2018Brought Back To Life\u2019 After 40,000 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" top-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761331691_757_960x0.jpg\" alt=\"U_B_permafrost\" data-height=\"697\" data-width=\"1000\" fetchpriority=\"high\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>XXX<\/p>\n<p>Tristan Caro\/University of Colorado at Boulder<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, a team of geologists and biologists led by the University of Colorado at Boulder resurrected ancient microbes that had been trapped in ice \u2014 in some cases for around 40,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers traveled to Fox, Alaska, where the U.S. Army Corps maintains a a 350 feet deep <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.erdc.usace.army.mil\/CRREL\/Permafrost-Tunnel-Research-Facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.erdc.usace.army.mil\/CRREL\/Permafrost-Tunnel-Research-Facility\/\" aria-label=\"tunnel\">tunnel<\/a> to study engineering problems associated with <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/ecosystems-land-change-science-program\/science\/science-topics\/permafrost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/ecosystems-land-change-science-program\/science\/science-topics\/permafrost\" aria-label=\"permafrost\">permafrost<\/a> \u2014 a frozen mix of organic debris, ice and rocks that underlies nearly a quarter of the land in the northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>They collected samples of permafrost that was a few thousand to tens of thousands of years old from the walls of the tunnel. They then added water and incubated them at temperatures of 39 and 54 degrees Fahrenheit, far above the mean temperature of permafrost hoovering around 14 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p>\n<p>The microbes preserved in the organic debris will take a while to become active. At first, these colonies grew at a creep, in some cases replacing only about one in every 100,000 cells per day. But after a few months, like waking up after a long nap, they begin to form flourishing colonies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are not dead samples by any means,&#8221; says geobiologist <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/people\/tristan-caro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/people\/tristan-caro\/\" aria-label=\"Tristan Caro\">Tristan Caro<\/a>, lead author of the study and a former graduate student in geological sciences at CU Boulder. <\/p>\n<p>This discovery has wide implications for the health of the Arctic, and the entire planet, adds study co-author <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/geologicalsciences\/sebastian-kopf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/geologicalsciences\/sebastian-kopf\" aria-label=\"Sebastian Kopf\">Sebastian Kopf<\/a>. As the microbes become active, they start to break down organic matter, releasing carbon dioxide in the process. <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidbressan\/2025\/10\/20\/greenhouse-gases-in-earths-atmosphere-hit-new-record\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidbressan\/2025\/10\/20\/greenhouse-gases-in-earths-atmosphere-hit-new-record\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas<\/a>, accelerating global warming.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers added there are still a lot of open questions, such as whether ancient organisms will behave the same way in the field as under ideal laboratory conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know very little about viruses and microbes in these extreme environments, and what is actually there,&#8221; explains <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/earthsciences.osu.edu\/people\/thompson.3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/earthsciences.osu.edu\/people\/thompson.3\" aria-label=\"Lonnie Thompson\">Lonnie Thompson<\/a>, a glaciologist unaffiliated with the new study who has published extensively on <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidbressan\/2022\/06\/28\/melting-glaciers-could-release-deadly-microbes-scientists-suggest\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidbressan\/2022\/06\/28\/melting-glaciers-could-release-deadly-microbes-scientists-suggest\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"bacteria preserved in glaciers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bacteria preserved in glaciers<\/a>. \u201cThe documentation and understanding of that is extremely important: How do bacteria and viruses respond to climate change?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the worst-case scenario, melting ice could release potentially infectious pathogens into the environment.
