Two women who were canvassing in support of Catherine Connolly in north Dublin have allegedly been assaulted.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred as Sinn F\u00e9in leader Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass, a party spokesman said.<\/p>\n
A video posted online shows a man approaching a canvass team for Ms Connolly and shouting threats to “deck” and “slap” some of them.<\/p>\n
It was reported to garda\u00ed that two females were assaulted on North Strand Road in Dublin shortly before 4pm this evening.<\/p>\n
They did not require medical treatment at the scene but garda\u00ed said they understand one of the females has since attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.<\/p>\n
They have appealed to anyone with camera footage of the incident to provide it to garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Sinn F\u00e9in said: “A man assaulted a young woman who was part of a team getting out the vote near the Five Lamps in the north inner city.<\/p>\n
“The garda\u00ed were called and are now investigating the matter.<\/p>\n
“The woman has been brought to hospital for medical examination.<\/p>\n
“This happened as Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass team, which is now continuing with its work of getting the vote out.”<\/p>\n
