Dickinson got her start in the early \u201870s after winning a national modeling competition that brought her to New York City. At the time, fashion was dominated by all-American looks like Christie Brinkley<\/a><\/strong> and Cheryl Tiegs<\/strong>, but Dickinson\u2019s more exotic features caught the eye of some of the top photographers. However, it wasn\u2019t an easy rise to fashion fame.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really hard,\u201d Dickinson said in an interview with Herald Extra<\/a> in 2002. \u201cGetting the door slammed in my face at every appointment: \u2018Sorry. Your face isn\u2019t the right shape to sell magazines.\u2019 \u2018Sorry. You\u2019re way too ethnic.\u2019 \u2018Excuse me. You don\u2019t serve our purposes.\u2019 \u2018You\u2019ll never make it in this town. You\u2019ll never make it, period.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Her big break came when she began working with legendary photographers like Richard Avedon and Francesco Scavullo, landing covers for Vogue, Harper\u2019s Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan. By the late \u201870s and early \u201880s, she was one of the most in-demand faces in fashion, walking for brands like Versace, Valentino, and Dior.<\/p>\n

In the \u201890s, Dickinson pivoted from modeling to writing and published a series of best-selling memoirs, including No Lifeguard on Duty, where she detailed her experiences in fashion, relationships with stars like Sylvester Stallone<\/a><\/strong>, and the darker side of modeling fame.<\/p>\n

She famously called herself \u201cthe world\u2019s first supermodel\u201d and often clashed with contestants over critiques that she considered \u201ctough love.\u201d Dickinson also clashed with her fellow judge Tyra Banks<\/strong>, and in June 2024, she revealed that she and Banks, 51, didn\u2019t get along.<\/p>\n

“No, she’s not a friendly lady,” Dickinson told Kaitlyn Bristowe<\/strong> during an appearance on the Off the Vine<\/a> podcast. \u201cShe does not like beautiful women.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also admitted that she \u201ctortured\u201d Banks while they worked on ANTM together.<\/p>\n

“Because, if she was going to be mean to the girls \u2014 I saw her ploy, just so I could remain under the radar. I’d tell her things like, ‘I did Vogue, you did Elle,'” Dickinson continued. “She was always late, keeping us waiting for hours and hours. A source later told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> that it was \u201csad and childish that Janice is trying to drag Tyra, but unsurprising, as she has a history of speaking negatively about her.”<\/p>\n

While both women remain significant figures in the modeling-and-reality TV world, their behind-the-scenes dynamic seems to remain unresolved.<\/p>\n
