{"id":145508,"date":"2025-10-26T01:59:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T01:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/145508\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T01:59:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T01:59:15","slug":"james-turrell-working-on-museum-skyspace-to-open-in-denmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/145508\/","title":{"rendered":"James Turrell Working on Museum \u2018Skyspace\u2019 to Open in Denmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA hole in a ceiling to help bring the heavens down to earth: it\u2019s a simple idea that has animated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/james-turrell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-turrell\" data-tag=\"james-turrell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Turrell<\/a>\u2019s series of \u201cSkyspace\u201d works dating back to the 1970s, including a new one set to open at the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s being touted as the largest-ever such work in a museum context (some are freestanding, in buildings of their own), and its opening in June will mark the completion of an expansion for the museum in Denmark\u2019s second-largest city, a harbor town around three hours by train from Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2_James-Turrell-Ganzfield-Apan.jpg\" alt=\"A man and a girl in a glowing pink room.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe work, titled As Seen Below \u2013 The Dome, a Skyspace by\u00a0James\u00a0Turrell, will be accessible via an underground corridor that leads to a domed space measuring around 50 feet tall and 130 feet in diameter. At the top is an open aperture through which what constitutes \u201cthe sky\u201d seems to descend and become discernible at a much closer distance. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWith\u00a0As Seen Below\u00a0I\u2019m shaping the experience of seeing rather than delivering an image,\u201d Turrell said in a statement. \u201cThe architecture holds the sky close, so you recognize that the act of looking is the work itself. Here light isn\u2019t description; it\u2019s the substance you stand within. In this Skyspace the day has weight, the evening has temperature, and the change belongs to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tARoS director Rebecca Matthews called it \u201can extraordinary work that invites visitors to slow down, look up, and experience light, time, and space in profoundly moving ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTurrell\u2019s new addition will be a finishing touch on the ARoS museum\u2019s \u201cNext Level\u201d expansion, which also includes an underground exhibition space for commissioned work that opened last summer and an outdoor \u201cArt Square\u201d space opening next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs for Turrell, the vaunted Light and Space artist continues to be busy at the age of 82, with work still ongoing on his fabled decades-long project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/artnews\/news\/james-turrell-roden-crater-asu-12802\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roden Crater<\/a>. In an interview this past summer, Turrell <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/29\/arts\/design\/james-turrell-exhibition-seoul.html\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the New York Times, \u201cWe have all the plans completed for the Roden Crater, so it can be finished if I\u2019m gone. But I would like to see that myself. Moses didn\u2019t get to go to the Promised Land. I will certainly continue as far as I can. I may have visualized the light at the end of the tunnel, but I haven\u2019t gone through it.
