\u201cThis is the first time I\u2019m doing it this way with an indie label,\u201d she told MassLive. \u201cI was at the same label for six years, and it was a major label. It was a different vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not only did the 26-year-old describe Section 1 as \u201cfierce,\u201d she also said the label \u201cvalues an artist\u2019s perspective and creativity\u201d more than her previous label. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m loving it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very \u2018Yes and\u2019 mentality. And I\u2019ve been really enjoying it … It feels like the beginning of a new era a little bit because I\u2019ve never put out music this way and this is the first of many records with them, I hope.\u201d <\/p>\n

Brooklyn-based artist King Princess is getting a new lease on life after she recently signed with indie record label Section 1. She released her first studio album, and third overall, called “Girl Violence” under the label on Sept. 12.Conor Cunningham<\/p>\n
King Princess, whose birth name is Mikaela Straus, rose to stardom when she independently released her debut single \u201c1950\u201d<\/a> in 2018. The success of the queer-anthem<\/a> led Straus to signing with Zelig Recordings, under which she released her debut studio album \u201cCheap Queen\u201d on Oct. 25, 2019 and sophomore album, \u201cHold On Baby,\u201d on July 29, 2022. <\/p>\n Straus said the organic success of her platinum-certified<\/a> debut single \u201cwas a complete fluke,\u201d given that it blew up without the support of a label.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was the right place, right time,\u201d the musician said. \u201cIt just happened. And I was new.\u201d<\/p>\n Nowadays, Straus doesn\u2019t concern herself with chasing that same level of success because she feels like \u201cthere\u2019s no difference anymore between indie and major.\u201d <\/p>\n She\u2019d rather focus on making music that she, and her new team, identify with that also resonates with fans.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m with a bunch of artistic nerds who want to put out cool [expletive] and just continue to write with the people I love to write with and make music with the people I love to make music with,\u201d Straus said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m just making the music I want to make and should be making. And it\u2019ll come when it\u2019ll come. That\u2019s where you got to go after you have a viral success out the gate. It sets an ungodly precedent that I\u2019m not really interested in participating in.\u201d<\/p>\n The artist continued, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t really matter what type of label you\u2019re signed to. All that matters is the fans and what they like and what is popping on the internet. So, for me, if anything, I just see myself being in a place where I get to explore my artistry and write the songs that I\u2019m supposed to be writing. And the genre doesn\u2019t really matter to me. It\u2019s really about the integrity in the music and not trying to write with the intention of success, but write with the intention of personal success.\u201d<\/p>\n On top of dropping \u201cGirl Violence\u201d \u2014 and an accompanying EP called<\/a> \u201cCherry\u201d on Oct. 17 \u2014 Straus has had her hands incredibly full this year. She most recently played<\/a> Austin City Limits Music Festival<\/a> earlier this month, which she compared to \u201can adult Disneyland.\u201d<\/p>\n ACL was also an ideal testing ground for Straus\u2019 new material. <\/p>\n \u201cIt felt really good to play the new record live and I also feel like the response was really awesome,\u201d the singer said. \u201cThe second weekend<\/a> was super locked in too. It\u2019s always fun doing two weekends because the second weekend is just like balls to the wall. It was awesome. I loved it. I love to perform.\u201d <\/p>\n ACL was also a good warmup for the \u201cGirl Violence\u201d tour<\/a>, which kicks off<\/a> Saturday, Oct. 25 in Nashville, Tennessee. Consisting of 29 stops, the tour includes a show<\/a> at House of Blues in Boston<\/a> on Sunday, Nov. 2.<\/p>\n The tour and album coincide with Straus\u2019 television debut as she starred in the second season of the Hulu series \u201cNine Perfect Strangers\u201d alongside Nicole Kidman, Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett and Annie Murphy, among others. Straus played the part of Tina, the girlfriend of Wolfie, who was played by Maise Richardson-Sellers. The musician described the characters\u2019 dynamic as \u201cthe most toxic Lesbian relationship possible\u201d in an interview with Deadline<\/a> back in June.<\/p>\n \u201cOur goal was to make a really flawed relationship between these two characters [where] you\u2019re rooting for them, but you kind of aren\u2019t,\u201d Straus told the outlet. <\/p>\n \u201cIt was important to us that these characters are both likable and unlikable in certain ways,\u201d she added. \u201cAt certain moments, you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, just break up.\u2019 That was important to us because, again, it\u2019s complex, it\u2019s weird. We\u2019re finding these people \u2014 they don\u2019t like each other. They love each other, but they don\u2019t like each other, and we\u2019re meeting them six years in.\u201d<\/p>\n Straus will make her film debut later this year with Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in \u201cSong Sung Blue.\u201d She also just finished filming another movie called \u201cOne Night Only\u201d that stars<\/a> Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner.<\/p>\n Acting has been a pretty seamless transition for Straus. She told MassLive she feels that \u201call musicians want to be actors, and all actors want to be musicians\u201d because of the \u201csymbiotic\u201d relationship between the two art forms. <\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve got onstage performances, you have music video performances \u2014 which is basically acting \u2014 and then you have songwriting, which feels very similar to character building,\u201d the artist said. \u201cIn my head, I see a lot of parallels, and I just think one makes the other better. So I\u2019ve been enjoying it.\u201d <\/p>\n Straus added that she has had \u201cthe sweetest deal ever\u201d because she has gotten \u201ca master class\u201d from these highly acclaimed actors at no cost. <\/p>\n \u201cI am getting the same education, but for free through them, which has kind of been incredible,\u201d she said. \u201cI get to be a student. I get to learn from these people who know a lot more than I do, and it\u2019s been really great.\u201d <\/p>\n However, the transition hasn\u2019t been all that easy. Straus has had to make some pretty significant adjustments in her sleep schedule so she can get to set on time. <\/p>\n \u201cThe music industry doesn\u2019t start before noon,\u201d the musician joked. \u201cTo go from playing an ACL where you\u2019re like, \u2018I\u2019m going to wake up at 2 p.m. for a 4 o\u2019clock show or whatever\u2026to then like, \u2018OK, your call time is 5:15 [in the morning]\u2019 and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 Like that\u2019s honestly the part that I was like, \u2018What an incredible endurance training experience.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d hits theaters nationwide on Dec. 25<\/a> while \u201cOne Night Only\u201d is slated for release in 2026, according to Deadline<\/a>.
