{"id":145574,"date":"2025-10-26T02:56:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T02:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/145574\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T02:56:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T02:56:12","slug":"tescos-irish-operation-made-e185m-profit-last-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/145574\/","title":{"rendered":"Tesco\u2019s Irish operation made \u20ac185m profit last year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Irish operation of supermarket giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tesco\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tesco\/\">Tesco<\/a> made a profit of \u20ac185.3 million on turnover of \u20ac3.45 billion last year, according to its latest accounts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This compared with a profit of \u20ac120.3 million on revenue of \u20ac3.26 billion in the previous year, and represented an improvement in its profit margin to 5.4 per cent from 3.7 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, when non-cash property-related charges are excluded for both years the profit margin drops to 5.1 per cent for 2024 and 4.8 per cent for the previous year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The accounts also note that the retailer benefited from reduced energy prices during the year, which also helped bolster its bottom line. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Total revenue grew by 5.8 per cent while on a like-for-like basis sales grew by 4.6 per cent, \u201cdriven by strong and consistent volume growth\u201d, the financial statements note. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/10\/20\/grocery-inflation-surges-to-highest-rate-since-2023\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grocery inflation surges to highest rate since 2023Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Accounts for Tesco Ireland Ltd for the year to February 22nd, 2025 also show that the company paid \u20ac120 million to its ultimate parent company, Tesco plc in the UK. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"> A \u20ac20 million dividend from Tesco Mobile\u2019s Irish operation was also paid during the year to the British listed parent group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish company closed the year with accumulated profits of \u20ac928 million. And it paid corporation tax of just under \u20ac29 million for the 12-month period. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Last year Tesco opened 12 new stores here, including six Express smaller format stores. It also recently expanded its online services, with the recent launch of Whoosh, which offers deliveries to customers within 45 minutes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the directors\u2019 report, a \u201cstandout performance [during last year] was food sales, which grew by 5 per cent driven by strong volume growth in fresh food, with 29 per cent volume growth in our Finest range [of products]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/10\/17\/tesco-ireland-boss-geoff-byrne-we-need-a-lot-of-houses-and-houses-need-shops-im-very-positive\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tesco Ireland boss Geoff Byrne: \u2018We need houses, and houses need shops. I\u2019m very positive\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tesco Ireland closed the year with 13,470 staff (up 346 on a year earlier) while payroll costs amounted to \u20ac474 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Directors remuneration was \u20ac3.4 million, up from just under \u20ac3 million a year earlier. Five directors served during the year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Based in D\u00fan Laoghaire and led by chief executive Geoff Byrne, Tesco has 185 stores in the Republic and 45 in the North. It is in the middle of an expansion drive, investing \u20ac100 million a year to add 10 stores annually to its network. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cMy ambition would be that every consumer in Ireland would be able to choose to go to a Tesco.
