{"id":14574,"date":"2025-08-21T19:47:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T19:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/14574\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T19:47:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T19:47:10","slug":"nasas-artemis-ii-lunar-science-operations-to-inform-future-missions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/14574\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA\u2019s Artemis II Lunar Science Operations to Inform Future Missions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"avatar avatar-200 photo thumbnail-lg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/cropped-lonnie-astro-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"The headshot image of Lonnie Shekhtman\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lonnie Shekhtman<\/p>\n<p>Aug 21, 2025<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Artemis II mission, set to send four astronauts on a nearly 10-day mission around the Moon and back, will advance the agency\u2019s goal to land astronauts at the Moon\u2019s south polar region and will help set the stage for future crewed Mars missions.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/artemis-ii\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II<\/a> crew will be the first humans to test NASA\u2019s Orion spacecraft in space, they will also conduct science investigations that will inform future deep space missions, including a lunar science investigation as Orion flies about 4,000 to 6,000 miles from the Moon\u2019s surface. From this distance, the Moon will appear to be the size of a basketball held at arm\u2019s length and will provide a unique opportunity for scientific observations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote-credit-name line-height-sm margin-0\">Kelsey Young<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote-credit-title line-height-sm padding-0 margin-0\">Artemis II lunar science lead at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>As Orion passes on the far side of the Moon \u2014 the side that always faces away from Earth \u00ad\u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/our-artemis-crew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">crew<\/a> will analyze and photograph geologic features on the surface, such as impact craters and ancient lava flows, relying on their extensive geology training in the classroom and in Moon-like places on Earth. The astronauts will also practice describing nuances in shapes, textures, and colors of surface features. This type of information reveals the geologic history of an area and will be critical to collect when Artemis III astronauts explore the surface.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtemis II is a chance for astronauts to implement the lunar science skills they&#8217;ve developed in training,\u201d said Kelsey Young, Artemis II lunar science lead at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s also an opportunity for scientists and the engineers in mission control to collaborate during real-time operations, building on the years of testing and simulations that our teams have done together.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The four Artemis II astronauts, NASA\u2019s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA\u2019s (Canadian Space Agency) Jeremy Hansen, could be the first humans to see some parts of the Moon\u2019s far side with the naked eye, depending on the spacecraft\u2019s final trajectory as determined upon launch. During the nine Apollo missions that left Earth\u2019s orbit, astronauts saw parts of the Moon\u2019s far side, but not all of it, as they were limited by which sections were lit during their orbits.<\/p>\n<p>One previously unlit region they may see is the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/moon\/lunar-craters\/the-explosive-history-of-orientale-basin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Orientale Basin<\/a>, a 600-mile-wide crater that serves as a transition point between the near and far side and is sometimes partly visible along the Moon\u2019s western edge.<\/p>\n<p>The astronauts may also get to observe flashes of light from space rocks striking the surface\u2014clues that help reveal how often the Moon gets hit\u2014or dust floating above the edge of the Moon, a mysterious phenomenon scientists want to understand.<\/p>\n<p>The crew\u2019s observations will help pave the way for lunar science activities on future Artemis missions to the Moon\u2019s surface, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/artemis-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Artemis III<\/a>. Artemis III astronauts will investigate the land forms, rocks, and other features around their landing site. They will also collect rock samples for generations of analyses in Earth labs and set up several instruments to investigate lunar properties and resources \u2014 information critical to future human exploration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether they\u2019re looking out the spacecraft\u2019s windows or walking the surface, Artemis astronauts will be working on behalf of all scientists to collect clues to the ancient geologic processes that shaped the Moon and our solar system,\u201d said Cindy Evans, NASA\u2019s Artemis geology training and strategic integration lead, based at NASA Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to lunar science observations, the crew will gather data on the effects of the space environment on the crew\u2019s health and performance. These experiments will be managed through the Payload Mission Operations Directorate at NASA\u2019s Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, Alabama, in tight coordination with mission control.
