But make no mistake, the classic aesthetic has been around far longer than the Magnolia Silos. And while many different forms of farmhouse style have evolved over time\u2014we\u2019re talking modern and industrial; rustic and refined; and all manner in between\u2014the intangibles that have kept them all under the farmhouse umbrella remain: charm, soul, and comfort. <\/p>\n

But let\u2019s talk about some of the more tangible features that have become synonymous with \u201cfarmhouse style.\u201d There are some design elements like exposed beams, wood paneling, and wide-open spaces that will never go out of style. Then there are some other ubiquitous items that many top designers say they would kindly ask you to remove immediately. <\/p>\n

Here are six farmhouse-style trends designers hope you will crop out of your farmhouse d\u00e9cor\u2014plus fresh alternatives to try instead!<\/p>\n

Too Many Reproductions<\/strong><\/p>\n

First and foremost, anything inauthentic needs to, well, buy the farm. \u201cI would steer away from kitschy Americana reproductions, such as signs, weathervanes, and game boards,\u201d says designer and owner of Connecticut-based antiques shop The Barns<\/a>, Ali Mahon. \u201cInstead, I prefer decorating with authentic folk art. Nineteenth-century examples are highly collectible with stories and soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Look, black and white will never go out of style, but sticking too strictly to this color combo can make your modern farmhouse feel tired. \u201cI am still a huge fan of floor-to-ceiling windows with black frames, but I\u2019d love to see homeowners incorporate more color on the exteriors and interiors of their farmhouses,\u201d says Austin-based designer Jamie Allen. \u201cFor interiors, I recommend more luscious colors like Benjamin Moore\u2019s Solitude or Smokey Mountain, and for exteriors you can ease into color by using Benjamin Moore\u2019s Collingwood or Edgecomb Gray to add a touch of \u2018not white.\u2019 \u201d She also adds to \u201calways, always, always paint the front door a bold color like Behr\u2019s Hidden Gem or Sherwin Williams\u2019 Salty Dog, especially if you keep your exterior white.\u201d<\/p>\n

When in doubt, go with patina over polish says New York-based designer Christina Salway<\/a>. \u201cThere is a \u2018mega-modern farmhouse\u2019 aesthetic that I think is overly polished with spotless engineered French oak floors, gleaming synthetic stone counter tops, blacker-than-black hardware, and faucets,\u201d she explains. \u201cI am a true lover of patina, and I think when you bring synthetic materials into the house, they feel like they are trapped in amber. I love to see a house soften over time, and those man-made materials will never show signs of life the way natural materials will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wall-to-Wall Wood Open Shelving<\/strong><\/p>\n

We get it! You want to show off granny\u2019s blue-and-white and your well-loved Pyrex collection<\/a>. But too much of anything is never a good thing. \u201cRustic wood open shelves always look really cool in photographs of farmhouse kitchens, and I’m not against have one. But a whole wall of open shelving can get a little messy,\u201d says Austin-based designer Murphy Moon. \u201cI don’t want to burden my clients with the task of keeping the items on the shelves curated\u2014not to mention dusted. Instead, I always recommend glass door cabinets with reeded or seeded glass so you get a sense of depth without having to keep things perfectly organized and tidy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cheap Barn Lights<\/p>\n

Again, Ali stresses keeping the mass-produced to a minimum, and that extends to trendy farmhouse-style lighting. \u201cTry to source a vintage one-of-kind gooseneck lantern or an original wheel chandelier,\u201d she says. \u201cAnother alternative is to custom design lighting fixtures, which creates one-of-a-kind heirlooms. Deep Landing Workshop<\/a> is well-known for making unique handcrafted interior and exterior lights.\u201d

While charming, barn doors<\/a> are probably not offering you the privacy you need, and the amount of real estate they take up on a wall can get annoying. That doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t have their place\u2014think: the utility room or a pantry\u2014but there are other ways to add something special to a door frame. \u201cFive-panel doors can be inexpensive, and they\u2019re timeless and mesh with many different styles,\u201d says Jamie. \u201cIn my door dreams, I would love to find a dealer who has the exact number of beautifully carved, old-world solid wood doors that I need for my house\u2014it would be like winning the door lottery! That said, even if you have regular old slab doors, they can be painted in a glossy finish to add some pizazz.\u201d <\/p>\n
