{"id":14683,"date":"2025-08-21T20:50:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T20:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/14683\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T20:50:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T20:50:08","slug":"dart-expansion-to-drogheda-approved-in-move-to-supercharge-commuter-capacity-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/14683\/","title":{"rendered":"Dart expansion to Drogheda approved in move to supercharge commuter capacity \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Plans to significantly increase commuter capacity on train services between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/drogheda\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/drogheda\/\">Drogheda<\/a>, Co Louth and Dublin city, including the electrification of the existing rail line, have been given the go ahead.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la, the planning authority, gave approval for the Dart+ Coastal North Railway Order, in a decision announced on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The current northside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\">Dart network<\/a> runs from Dublin city centre as far as Malahide and Howth. Under the new plan, electric-powered trains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2024\/07\/12\/dart-expansion-to-drogheda-on-track-as-planning-application-lodged\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2024\/07\/12\/dart-expansion-to-drogheda-on-track-as-planning-application-lodged\/\">would operate as far north as Drogheda<\/a>, incorporating a huge section of Dublin\u2019s surrounding commuter belt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Construction of the new infrastructure could take up to three years, subject to funding availability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\">Irish Rail<\/a> said the project would significantly increase peak hourly capacity and frequency on the northern route between Dublin city and Malahide, Howth and Drogheda. It said that potentially, capacity could nearly double from about 4,800 to 8,800 passengers at peak times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Such an increase in services would be subject to demand, it said, and would form part of a separate timetable consultation process in conjunction with the National Transport Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The plan involves 37km (23 miles) of electrification and re-signalling along the railway line between Malahide and MacBride Station in Drogheda. In addition there will be a reconstruction of the existing track layout in the vicinity of Drogheda, Malahide, Clongriffin and Howth Junction\/ Donaghmede stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2025\/06\/26\/the-irish-times-view-on-public-transport-in-dublin-keep-pushing-forward\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Irish Times view on public transport in DublinOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However the plan to increase capacity on the northern line could necessitate timetable changes curtailing existing direct train services between Howth and Dublin city. This could involve the possible introduction of a shuttle service between Howth Junction\/ Donaghamede and Howth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That potential change has generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2024\/09\/03\/absolute-disaster-irish-rails-proposal-for-feeder-service-on-howth-dart-line-sparks-local-anger\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/dublin\/2024\/09\/03\/absolute-disaster-irish-rails-proposal-for-feeder-service-on-howth-dart-line-sparks-local-anger\/\">considerable opposition<\/a> from some residents using Howth, Sutton and Bayside stations as it would require passengers from those areas to change trains at Howth Junction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish Rail and the CIE group maintained during the planning process that any such changes would not come into effect immediately and would require further public consultation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Critics of the plan argue that a shuttle service to Howth would involve existing level crossings being closed on a more frequent basis, further inhibiting traffic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the planning commission said such an increase in level crossing closures would improve train efficiency and remove delays on the railway caused by congestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also said that while the changes may, in time, bring about a new shuttle service to Howth, general environmental impacts in terms of traffic, transportation, residential amenities, property valuation, noise and vibration would not be significant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Proposed design and security provisions at Howth Junction\/ Donaghmede station would be expected to \u201caid in minimising and monitoring the effects of antisocial behaviour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Construction of the new rail infrastructure could take up to three years, subject to funding. Photograph: Hugh Dooley\/ The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Remodelling the service would lead to potentially significant, negative short-term effects from the construction phase in terms of noise, vibration, dust, access restrictions and traffic including night-time work.
