{"id":146964,"date":"2025-10-27T00:12:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T00:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/146964\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T00:12:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T00:12:07","slug":"fianna-fail-tds-discussing-efforts-to-remove-micheal-martin-as-party-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/146964\/","title":{"rendered":"Fianna F\u00e1il TDs discussing efforts to remove Miche\u00e1l Martin as party leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of Fianna F\u00e1il TDs have begun discussing an effort to oust party leader Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/p>\n<p>The behind the scenes talks come as the fallout from the  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/presidential-election-2025\/\">presidential election<\/a>\u00a0rolls on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Martin had backed Jim Gavin to be the party&#8217;s nominee in the race, but was embarrassed as he withdrew following revelations that he owed a former tenant \u20ac3,300.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Any no confidence motion in the Taoiseach would require 12 TDs to sign a motion \u2014 which would trigger a special ard fheis to vote on the leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sources have said that there could be as many as 10 TDs who would sign a motion, though one source said whether those 10 would be willing to publicly go against the party leader is debatable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Anger around Mr Gavin&#8217;s botched candidacy led to a five-hour parliamentary party meeting and the establishment of an internal review, but the weekend&#8217;s results,  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/politics\/arid-41730042.html\">which saw Mr Gavin attract over 100,000<\/a> votes despite the suspension of his campaign, has reignited the anger among TDs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One source said that they did not believe those who wanted to see Mr Martin go would move before the review is completed in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another senior party source said that some within Fianna F\u00e1il had backed Mr Gavin and were now seeking to &#8220;put it all on the shoulders of the leader&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They said that they believed that &#8220;cool heads should prevail&#8221; and the issue be shelved until after the review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to say there wasn&#8217;t an issue there. But why have the review if we&#8217;re not going to see what it says?
