{"id":148615,"date":"2025-10-27T23:55:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T23:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/148615\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T23:55:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T23:55:07","slug":"people-are-very-angry-lidl-lodges-appeal-as-council-rejects-plan-for-new-limerick-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/148615\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;People are very angry&#8217;: Lidl lodges appeal as council rejects plan for new Limerick store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RESIDENTS in Abbeyfeale are \u2018very angry\u2019 that Lidl was denied <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/231\/planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">planning permission<\/a><\/strong> to build a new store on the outskirts of the town, a local councillor has claimed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposed development was earmarked for the Killarney Road, and\u00a0would have created a number of permanent jobs in the locality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The German-owned retailer sought permission from the local authority to demolish the former Sheehy&#8217;s Hardware Store and proposed to build the shop on the grounds of the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Planning permission was refused on the grounds that the proposed development was contrary to the current zoning for the area, and because the site\u2019s location did not align with the Abbeyfeale Local Area Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The decision of the local authority has now been appealed to\u00a0An Comisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la and a decision is expected to be made early in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/planning\/1924022\/permission-to-be-sought-for-huge-new-riverside-development-in-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Permission to be sought for huge new riverside development in Limerick<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Abbeyfeale Local Area Plan prioritises that development should be kept in the town\u2019s centre, where possible.\u00a0Abbeyfeale town centre is located approximately 1 km to the north-east of the proposed Lidl development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Abbeyfeale Cllr Galvin told the Limerick Leader \/ Limerick Live that he was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d that Lidl were not granted planning permission for the new store.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m speaking on behalf of the people I\u2019m elected to represent. People have come to me very angry,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need development in our town. At the moment the cost of living is very high, we need competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Galvin further added: \u201cThe executive have to be held accountable. I have a big issue why the planners didn\u2019t reach out to the council,&#8221; he stated, describing the\u00a0decision as a \u201clazy refusal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Francis Foley &#8211; also from Abbeyfeale &#8211; said: \u201cThere is a local area plan for Abbeyfeale. It [the planned Lidl development] was outside of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Cllr Foley added: \u201cMost people would like to see it (the Lidl store) coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At present, Abbeyfeale has a Supervalu and Tesco for grocery shoppers in the locality.
