{"id":149063,"date":"2025-10-28T06:31:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149063\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T06:31:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T06:31:15","slug":"novel-by-killybegs-author-nominated-for-irish-book-awards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149063\/","title":{"rendered":"Novel by Killybegs author nominated for Irish Book Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A novel by a Killybegs author has been nominated for a prestigious nod at the Irish Book Awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Garrett Carr\u2019s novel, The Boy from the Sea, has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in the Irish Novel of the Year category.<\/p>\n<p>The book is set in Killybegs, starting in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>Following a fishing family called the Bonnars, it deals with the ramifications of their decision to adopt an abandoned baby.<\/p>\n<p>This decision to follow a family in the fishing industry alone makes it unique, according to the book\u2019s author.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFishing families have hardly appeared in Irish literature at all,\u201d says Garrett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(It) is part of the reason I wanted to write about one \u2013 like a businessperson spots a gap in the market, I felt it was a gap in the culture. Plus, it is my own background, I am the son of a fisherman, so I felt it was a job I could take on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-612048\" class=\"size-full wp-image-612048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Garrett_Carr_3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-612048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Novelist Garrett Carr.<\/p>\n<p>In a couple of paragraphs the beginning of the novel, fisherman Ambrose Bonnar travels around Ireland to work out of Waterford, Cork, Galway and other harbours before returning to Donegal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI included that as I wanted to make it clear the novel is set not just in Ireland, but in Donegal,\u201d Garrett explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to capture its distinct character and the first step was saying it\u2019s not like these other places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also emphasises that this is a novel set in the real Killybegs, based on the dramatic comings and goings of the town as it entered a rapid period of growth in the 1970s and 80s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe town was always such a one-off, especially in the 1970s and 80s, when The Boy from the Sea is set, and when the fishing industry was expanding so rapidly, there was great drama to be found in how fortunes were won and lost in those times.
