title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/\">UAE<\/a> are prioritising mental health over physical care, marking a remarkable shift in attitudes to well-being, an international survey has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-RGFZICEZ4BGRDJ5GDAJLJKTENA\">At least 11,800 people were included in the assessment of 13 international markets including the US, UK and Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-SHR65KU4ERFALGLKPEY72NIABE\">Vitality and well-being across physical, mental, financial, family and work dimensions related to the way people accessed care were examined, as part of the 2025 Cigna Healthcare International Health Study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-G43UNLBQMRAN3FEQIGYUICFEP4\">For the first time, people responding in the UAE to an in-depth questionnaire in May 2025 said they valued their mental health over physical health. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-ZY2QDEQE5NESJD2O2WEBMC6TU4\">The number of UAE residents reporting strong mental health rose seven points year-on-year, to 64 per cent of those asked, 21 points above the global average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-YLAGNWYHABF4JFGSZQXVCG3UD4\">Men reported the highest levels (68 per cent) followed by 55 per cent of women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-R26AJRKP3BH5HNQH2UCH52KEGQ\">Leah Cotterill, chief executive of Cigna Healthcare Middle East, said there are key reasons why the UAE now bucks the global trend of physical health first, mental health second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-A65R5FZVUZAQZEGYMHNB2ZE53I\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing clear evidence that national investment in mental health access, preventive care and digital innovation are delivering measurable outcomes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-ZBNBFEQ45NEVDPUM4OYXBZFBSA\">\u201cFor the first time, mental well-being has overtaken physical health as the UAE\u2019s top focus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-UAKQ6QITYRDNBPNC3JTZZABMCQ\">\u201cWe interpret these findings as part of a wider and profound cultural shift, where health is no longer defined merely as the absence of illness, but as the presence of balance, vitality and emotional resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-EJMEOUQHZJC3HLVTXR4EDMIT6U\">\u201cThis transformation has been shaped by national dialogue, progressive workplace initiatives and reduced stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" _id=\"UO5JMN4D7VGYHKTV64TCI2EGNA\" type=\"image\" originalheight=\"3741\" alt=\"\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"low\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/UO5JMN4D7VGYHKTV64TCI2EGNA.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"333\"\/><b>Obstacles to providing care<\/b> <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-DZBMEFVW2RHOLKFCW4UL4VSI4I\">Prejudice, taboos, as well as religious and cultural beliefs, have affected efforts by some countries to deliver critical mental healthcare services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-BBFQGAADAFC6DEMPGX4RYLPPGQ\">Underinvestment or overpriced care costs due to a shortage of mental health professionals have also been blamed for some national health systems falling short regulations has boosted availability of appropriate mental health support in the UAE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-Y5ZLINUS6JDPVH2QM3TCRRWEYE\">While the Federal Mental Health Law and Dubai\u2019s Dh105 million Mental Health Framework have underscored a commitment to building a healthier, more resilient population, community programmes like Abu Dhabi\u2019s Parent-Friendly Label, which promotes flexible work arrangements, continue to embed well-being within daily life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-GTWFQVFJ3JAKBED7YIAQM4DS3Y\">Dr Shahana Kasim, a psychiatrist at NMC Specialty Hospital, Abu Dhabi, said mental health is \u201can important determinant of the economic progress of the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-Q2HBH5UK7RHBBK5J3C3PUQM5BQ\">\u201cUntreated mental illness affects a person&#8217;s functioning in all spheres of their life, including occupational functioning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-EZ7EDFMSCJCQ3MFSKZ7I4KA3II\">\u201cThis results in loss of productivity for the company, ultimately becoming a barrier to the development and progress of the country as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-6KNOKBN4K5B7FJRQJPLFLROU4I\">A common barrier preventing vulnerable people receiving adequate care is poor mental health literacy, with Dr Kasim saying that mental health conditions are still considered as a sign of weakness by some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-I6KJJL5VIRBUVFB6REXDV6ZNAA\">\u201cMisconceptions about mental health, mental illness and its treatment remains prevalent in the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-OENDUO4QLFFAXGDSMHAHDTTYDQ\">\u201cConditions such as depression and anxiety are frequently misunderstood and unfairly stigmatised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-NIEDGNJRCNB4HOYI5QJG6OO3Y4\">\u201cSome believe that experiencing mental health issues is a sign of weak faith or spiritual failure, leading them to feel guilty or ashamed, particularly when facing issues like depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-FHFPYYGMOBAQVFEH7QNXLLK3XU\">\u201cFear of judgment is another common barrier. However, these results can be considered a landmark in mental health literacy in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-NZFQOMYRDZDX7AQYSILM6FNKJM\">Of those aged 25-44 asked in the survey about their physical health, 46 per cent said they ate a balanced healthy diet, 52 per cent enjoyed regular quality sleep but fewer than half (46 per cent) exercised regularly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-6L5C747JIFH4REHQS5VTVO2OHU\">Generally, younger people were more likely to focus on their mental well-being, according to Dr Shaju George, a psychiatrist at International Modern Hospital in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-32-QSZGXQ3OINEE5FHFADQ3TXT4TY\">\u201cThere is no health without mental health,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-IRESICQY45BIVLJHRMFKASV3CM\">\u201cYounger generations across the globe, especially the ones from UAE, talk a lot about mental health issues \u2013 they don&#8217;t consider it a taboo subject any more. They do seek help and do not show any shame to acknowledge that fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-EM3CMQCYL5HFXD4DF27CTA2MJM\">The UAE switch in health priorities reflects trends in the global agenda. A recent UN declaration formally placed mental health on an equal footing with chronic diseases like cancer and cardio vascular disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-36-PZIFSDPJDJBWPCVJGHRVBONI44\">The document has yet to receive final approval by the UN General Assembly, but it signals a global shift towards mental illness being treated by everyday primary health clinics, rather than specialist centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-37-JDETUYAB7JDYVMGXTQGC5RHVHM\">Treatments offered locally by government health authorities could open up access to mental health care for a further 150 million people by 2030, the UN estimates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-38-ECEIRPWJFBBMXEXABAACXHJGUY\">\u201cWith insurance companies covering mental health as part of their policies, more residents have the means to access mental health care, which is a positive shift,\u201d said Dr Sneha John, a psychologist at Medcare Camali Clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-39-BPKWXVVLKRBKVGHYFZWLYT636U\">\u201cPost pandemic, I have seen an increase in individuals seeking help for stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges, often reflecting a cultural shift towards valuing mental health as a critical component of holistic wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-41-Z4555S3CRFFAPOF52PJDYCXETU\">According to the World Health Organisation, more than a billion people are living with a mental health issue, but fewer than seven per cent are estimated to receive effective treatment, with service waiting times lasting months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-42-6WQMVMRLXRAVVHDISWQOEWRWGI\">Dr Roberta Fedele, a clinical psychologist, at the BPS Clinic in Dubai said there had been a significant change in attitudes since 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-43-DXNH5OTQVNEWXNR473ETM44ZAU\">\u201cThe UAE has witnessed a significant shift in the perception of mental health, which has increasingly become a priority for many people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-44-S2NGV4YYLZGAFPFF6YERI2IPUQ\">\u201cOne of the main reasons for this change is the rapid growth of mental health and well-being centres, as well as the publication of numerous articles, research studies, and surveys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-45-OONRLN4BC5B6PHOUQZGVCZX7WU\">\u201cAdditionally, several prominent public figures in the region have helped break the stigma by openly sharing their personal struggles and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-46-YMJGATRG2RHW5PKQY5OY6OLAC4\">Dr Fedele said the most common mental health concerns she treated included adjustment issues related to relocation, anxiety and depression, as well as previously undiagnosed conditions such as adult ADHD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-47-KXQS5DPOGVGIFANA6GFHV3OMEQ\">\u201cRelationship
