{"id":149745,"date":"2025-10-28T15:03:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T15:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149745\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T15:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T15:03:08","slug":"mum-of-three-accused-of-stealing-e3-chicken-to-be-extradited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149745\/","title":{"rendered":"Mum-of-three accused of stealing \u20ac3 chicken to be extradited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Roma woman who claimed her children were happy at school in Ireland, but face bullying if returned to Czechia, has lost an extradition case.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, who faces jail in Czechia for shoplifting and has been accused of stealing \u2018chicken wrap strips\u2019 worth \u20ac3 from Tesco, has lost her bid to remain in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Lucie Balgova, who is a member of the Roma community, had argued that she had suffered extreme prejudice in all aspects of her life in Czechia, also known as the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/court-stock.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1703307\"  \/>A Roma woman who claimed her children were happy at school in Ireland, but face bullying if returned to Czechia, has lost an extradition case. Pic: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The mother-of-three also claimed that her two older children, aged 15 and 12, had been bullied in Czechia due to their ethnicity, but had \u2018flourished\u2019 at school in Portlaoise, Co. <a href=\"http:\/\/extra.ie\/tag\/laois\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laois<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed her surrender to her home country would be a breach of her and her family\u2019s rights under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/human-rights-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">European Convention on Human Rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Judge Patrick McGrath noted Ms Balgova had come here in the full knowledge she had a 12-month sentence imposed upon her.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/czech-republic.jpg\" alt=\"Charming european town square with colorful historic buildings and blue sky. Pic: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He said the sentence had been handed down by a district court in Decin in October 2023, for two acts of theft, and she was also wanted for prosecution for an alleged third theft.<\/p>\n<p>The box ticked in the relevant European Arrest Warrant was for \u2018scam\/swindling\u2019, he said. A narrative account of the theft referred to shoplifting, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The first two offences were carried out in late 2022 and early 2023, while in the third she was alleged to have stolen \u2018two pieces of chicken strips wrap from a Tesco Local store\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/court-stock-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1703310\"  \/>Pic: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Ms Balgova had told the court the children\u2019s father was serving a custodial sentence in Czechia, and she was the sole carer for her children, with no relative or friend who could step in to help.<\/p>\n<p>Judge McCarthy said that \u2018given the relatively minor nature of this offending and alleged offending\u2019, the court had written to the Czech authorities, asking whether \u2013 bearing in mind her family circumstances \u2013 her surrender was still sought. They said it was, pointing to a criminal record that was not disclosed in the High Court judgment.<\/p>\n<p>They stated: \u2018Given the defendant\u2019s personality, her criminal history and the number of unconditional prison sentences she has not served, it is obvious that she fled to Ireland to avoid the sentences already imposed and the prosecution in the present case.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The legal system of the Czech Republic does not allow for any other course of action than to insist on her extradition.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Justice Minister Jim O\u2019Callaghan said her alleged theft of the chicken strips highlighted a risk of recidivism.
