{"id":149944,"date":"2025-10-28T17:30:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T17:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149944\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T17:30:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T17:30:11","slug":"storm-makes-landfall-in-jamaica-with-sustained-winds-of-295-km-h-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/149944\/","title":{"rendered":"storm makes landfall in Jamaica with sustained winds of 295 km\/h \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\">Hurricane Melissa <\/a>has made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2025\/10\/27\/hurricane-melissa-strengthens-to-category-5-as-evacuations-ordered-in-jamaicas-capital\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2025\/10\/27\/hurricane-melissa-strengthens-to-category-5-as-evacuations-ordered-in-jamaicas-capital\/\">landfall in Jamaica<\/a> as a Category 5 storm, one of the most powerful ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The storm struck the island after the US National Hurricane Centre, which monitors Atlantic storms, said it had maximum sustained wind speeds of 295 km\/h. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Widespread devastation to the island is expected, and authorities have ordered mandatory evacuations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Melissa is the second Atlantic storm ever to make landfall with such strong winds. The only other storm to reach such wind speed at landfall occurred before hurricanes were officially named and was known as the \u201cLabor Day Hurricane\u201d of 1935, which killed hundreds and caused serious damage in the Florida Keys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s a catastrophic situation expected in Jamaica,\u201d the World Meteorological Organisation\u2019s tropical cyclone specialist Anne-Claire Fontan told a Geneva press briefing. \u201cFor Jamaica, it will be the storm of the century for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Storm surges of up to four meters were expected, she said, with rainfall set to exceed 70cm, causing \u201ccatastrophic flash flooding and landslides,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) expects the storm to hit Jamaica on Tuesday, and then cross eastern Cuba to move over the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos by Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Melissa has begun lashing Jamaica with violent gusts as the US National Hurricane Center upgraded it to a Category 5 storm <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The hurricane\u2019s slow movement over unusually tepid Caribbean water had contributed to its ballooning size and strength, NHC forecasters said, threatening Jamaica with days of never-before-seen catastrophic winds and rain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The International Federation of the Red Cross said up to 1.5 million people in Jamaica were expected to be directly affected by the storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cToday will be very difficult for tens of thousands, if not millions of people in Jamaica,\u201d the Red Cross\u2019s Necephor Mghendi said via video link from Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRoofs will be tested, flood waters will rise, isolation will become a harsh reality for many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To enable swift relief distribution, essential items \u2013 tarpaulins, hygiene kits, blankets and safe drinking water \u2013 had been pre-positioned in Red Cross branches on the island, he said, with more than 800 shelters set up for evacuees.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Volunteers assemble relief packages ahead of  Hurricane Melissa at the Global Empowerment Mission headquarters in Miami, Florida. Photograph: Chandan Khanna\/AFP via Getty Images         <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday, prime minister Andrew Holness ordered mandatory evacuations for parts of southern Jamaica, including the historic town of Port Royal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He warned of damage to farmlands, homes and infrastructure on the island, which is roughly the size of Connecticut and whose main airports sit close to sea level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Holness said his government was as prepared as can be, with an emergency response budget of $33 million and insurance and credit provisions for damage a little larger than that sustained from last year\u2019s devastating Hurricane Beryl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Beryl was the earliest and fastest Atlantic hurricane on record to reach Category 5, but scientists warn that storms are becoming stronger faster as a result of climate change warming ocean waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSlow-moving major hurricanes often go down in history as some of the deadliest and most destructive storms on record,\u201d said AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter. \u201cThis is a dire situation unfolding in slow motion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Workers board up shop windows ahead of Hurricane Melissa&#x2019;s forecast arrival in Kingston, Jamaica. Photograph: Matias Delacroix\/AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Damian Anderson, a teacher from Hagley Gap, a town nestled in Jamaica\u2019s Blue Mountains, said on Monday impassable roads had already cut off his community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe can\u2019t move,\u201d Anderson (47), said. \u201cWe\u2019re scared.
