{"id":150516,"date":"2025-10-29T00:39:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T00:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/150516\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T00:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T00:39:09","slug":"stepping-off-is-bodyshaming-to-blame-for-singer-nelly-furtado-deciding-to-leave-the-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/150516\/","title":{"rendered":"Stepping off: Is bodyshaming to blame for singer Nelly Furtado deciding to leave the stage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian singer Nelly Furtado has announced she is taking a break from performing. <\/p>\n<p>The artist, who produced hits including \u2018Maneater\u2019 and \u2018Promiscuous\u2019, said she has &#8220;decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Furtado, 46, shared the statement on social media on Friday, saying she plans to pursue &#8220;other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Bounced out by body shaming?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/10\/28\/rosalia-releases-berghain-her-collaboration-with-bjork-and-first-preview-of-her-new-album-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Furtado recently<\/strong><\/a> recently finished her Better Than Ever summer festival tour and her announcement comes after she apparently made a pointed statement calling out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/01\/29\/januhairy-what-embracing-body-hair-says-about-the-beauty-ideal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>bodyshaming<\/strong><\/a> during a performance at Manchester Pride. <\/p>\n<p>The singer wore an oversized t-shirt with an optical illusion cartoon drawing of a woman\u2019s hourglass body. On the reverse were the words \u2018Better than ever\u2019 in a tattoo-style font. <\/p>\n<p>While Furtado did not explicitly acknowledge that the outfit was a comment on bodyshaming, her stylist Phil Gomez shared a post on Instagram after the performance that said she &#8220;shuts down body shamers&#8221; with the outfit.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Furtado has spoken out about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/10\/18\/whats-victorias-secret-how-a-lingerie-show-became-a-must-watch-fashion-runway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>body image<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cI have olive skin, and they\u2019d kind of lighten my skin a lot in photos and kind of take my hips down all the time &#8211; they would always cut off in editorials,\u201d she told People last year.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the singer shared a post on Instagram addressing false rumours about her appearance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whoever cares, I have never had any face or body surgeries or augmentation, besides for veneers on the top row of my teeth, quite recently,\u201d she wrote. \u201cSo far, I have not had any face or lip injections or fillers of any kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furtado urged her fans to \u201cexpress yourself freely, celebrate your individuality and know that it\u2019s perfectly OK to be OK with what you see in the mirror, and it\u2019s also OK to want something different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stepping away from stage performances<\/p>\n<p>Furtado, who won a Grammy award for her debut single \u2018I\u2019m Like a Bird\u2019, returned to music in 2024 after a seven-year break.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really feel like I was called back to the industry by the industry, especially DJs,&#8221; she told Grammy.com in an interview at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would go out and hear my songs played before arena shows of other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/07\/30\/mdee-meet-the-self-made-kazakh-artist-whos-shaping-the-future-of-central-asian-music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>artists<\/strong><\/a>, and at house parties and clubs\u2026 I thought, this can only be remixed so many times, I better go make some new stuff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her announcement to stop performing came as she marked the 25th anniversary of her first studio album, \u2018Whoa, Nelly!\u2019 in 2000. <\/p>\n<p>In her Instagram post, Furtado shared a photo of herself aged 20, preparing to perform at her \u201cfirst show as a professional artist at Lilith Fair\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She also posted a video from a concert in Berlin this summer, showing her \u201cfinally understanding what receiving flowers means\u201d as the crowd chants her name. <\/p>\n<p>In the post, Furtado reflects that 25 years on from her first album, her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/06\/29\/singing-from-the-meadow-bass-from-the-city-how-swada-is-reinventing-traditional-slavic-mus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>music<\/strong><\/a> has \u201creached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn\u2019t be happier about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It\u2019s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career.
