Leicester Crown Court heard that Polish national Julia Wandelt (24) felt \u201cashamed\u201d to have received around \u00a3400 (\u20ac455) from people wanting to help her get answers about her identity because she \u201cknows what it looks like\u201d.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors allege Ms Wandelt, from Lubin in south-west Poland, claimed she is Madeleine \u2013 who disappeared during a family holiday in Portugal in 2007 \u2013 while stalking Kate and Gerry McCann by sending emails, making calls and turning up at their home.<\/p>\n
Giving evidence on yesterday, Ms Wandelt told the jury she did not mean to upset Ms McCann, adding that she wanted to assist her.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI got the impression that police did not pass any information to Kate and Gerry. I just thought they were misled and I just wanted to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt said she wanted to speak to Ms McCann to \u201cexplain all the pieces of evidence\u201d and the memories she had, adding that the chance she could be Madeleine outweighed the \u201cpotential disappointment\u201d for the McCanns.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cIf you compared false hope and potential truth coming out… I\u2019m not a mother but I have younger siblings. If my sister or brother went missing I would do everything… if I had a little hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
She told the court she could remember being \u201cheld with other girls\u201d and abused, including \u201csome faces and certain names and what the place looked like\u201d.<\/p>\n

The court previously heard that Ms Wandelt called and messaged Ms McCann more than 60 times in one day in April last year.<\/p>\n
Defence barrister Tom Price asked Ms Wandelt why she \u201cpersisted\u201d in trying to contact Ms McCann after receiving no response.<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt told the court: \u201cI thought that DNA should be done, it should have been done in the beginning and I didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought it was because of the media, because of what they said about me. I thought maybe that was the reason why she didn\u2019t want to do the DNA test, because maybe she was told I\u2019m crazy or that I am lying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Price asked: \u201cDid you think if you had a chance to speak to her, you could persuade her you weren\u2019t crazy?\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt replied: \u201cYes. There was no engagement from her, nothing, and there was something odd about it. It was all the time silence, I just didn\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked what would have made her stop the phone calls, Ms Wandelt said: \u201cA conversation with me and a DNA test.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Price asked what she would do if Ms McCann asked her to leave her alone, and Ms Wandelt said: \u201cIf she called me, after listening to my evidence and giving me the chance to explain… I think I would respect this.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy identity is important to me, I want to know who I am, but there are things going on in the background of people\u2019s lives. I guess I would respect her decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt said she felt \u201cashamed\u201d she had received money totalling 2,000 Polish zloty, or around \u00a3400, from people wanting to help her.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cMy friends advised me to ask people for help.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt bad about this, especially (because) this is not their life… I should be able to take care of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
She told the court she \u201cmentions quite often\u201d that she is not after money because \u201cpeople read what is written about me in the news\u201d and \u201cget all the lies\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt said she did get money for a polygraph or lie detector test \u201cfrom people who wanted to help me\u201d, adding that her boyfriend told her to move out without any savings.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI\u2019m ashamed of this because I know what it looks like. I did not want to end up homeless on the street with my boyfriend telling me I have to move out straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n
An American woman called Fia Johansson contacted her when she set up an Instagram account called \u201cI am Madeleine McCann\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said she would be able to help me. A lot of people were warning me, saying it could be dangerous. I was desperate.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said she is in touch with Kate and Gerry McCann and they agreed for a DNA test with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Price asked: \u201cDid you believe her?\u201d and Ms Wandelt replied: \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cShe came to Poland, flew from United States \u2013 it should be a red flag to me but it wasn\u2019t at the time.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe took over my Instagram account even before she came to Poland.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt said she went to the US after Ms Johansson told her she was \u201cin danger in Poland\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe organised interviews, not sure actually how or why. I did not see the point, for example, going on Dr Phil. It was all her idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she did not get paid to appear on the Dr Phil psychology chat show.<\/p>\n
Ms Wandelt and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg (61), of Caerau Court Road in Caerau, Cardiff, deny stalking between June 2022 and February this year.<\/p>\n
