href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-transport\">bus service<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> city are set to go to Cabinet for approval, bringing the project a step closer to planning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Minister for Transport <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a> is expected to seek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a> approval in principle for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/busconnects\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/busconnects\/\">BusConnects<\/a> programme. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Cork city is expected to be one of the fastest-growing city regions in Ireland and its population is projected to increase to at least 315,000 people by 2040.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Cabinet approval would ultimately allow for a planning application to be lodged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-coimisiun-pleanala\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-coimisiun-pleanala\/\">An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">BusConnects Cork is set to include 11 sustainable transport corridors with dedicated bus lanes intended to make journeys faster, frequent and accessible along with improved cycling and pedestrian facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__text--left\">It is understood the preliminary business case for BusConnects Cork has gone through a required external review and examination by the Government\u2019s Major Projects Advisory Group, as required under infrastructure guidelines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The completion of these steps paves the way for the detailed design and procurement phase of the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">BusConnects Cork is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\">National Transport Authority<\/a>\u2019s (NTA) Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy 2020-2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It is hoped the project will bring about a reduction in peak bus journey times by up to 20 per cent and save around 2,700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2032.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" longest commutes: Tell us about your daily journeyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In 2022 the NTA put the cost of the Cork plan at \u20ac600 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier this month Mr O\u2019Brien told the D\u00e1il that BusConnects was \u201ca transformative programme of investment in the bus system, providing better bus services across five cities\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">As well as in Dublin, bus system revamps are also planned for Galway, Limerick and Waterford in what Mr O\u2019Brien said was \u201cthe largest investment in the bus system in the history of the State\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a written response to a D\u00e1il question from Independent Ireland TD Ken O\u2019Flynn, Mr O\u2019Brien outlined how the proposed BusConnects network for Cork was published in June 2022 after a period of public consultation. It aims to \u201cprovide an increase of over 50 per cent in bus services across the city\u201d. He said it was expected that the new network will be \u201cimplemented on a phased basis in the coming years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The BusConnects programme for Dublin has already seen changes to some services and various phases of a network redesign. There is an expectation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2025\/07\/31\/busconnects-will-come-in-on-time-on-budget-says-darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2025\/07\/31\/busconnects-will-come-in-on-time-on-budget-says-darragh-obrien\/\">12 segregated bus corridors will be completed in 2030<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There have been some hurdles to progressing the plans in the capital.
