In maze-like corridors, each turn mirrors the last, and every junction looks identical. Long hallways lined with repeating walls, doors, and paintings on either side leave us unsure where we\u2019ve been or where we can go. \u201cWithout landmarks or a visible end, your brain struggles to tell you where you are in space,\u201d says Tauke. \u201cThis produces mild disorientation and gives you a signal that something might be unsafe or \u2018off.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2112.05938\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2021 study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2021 study<\/a> on architectural form and affect found that changes in spatial complexity, curvature, and lighting influence physiological arousal\u2014people become more activated (alert, keyed up) when they move through certain kinds of rooms. Brendon Burton<\/p>\n<p><b>Prediction errors shape perception<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The brain\u2019s spatial mapping system depends on stability, says Giocomo. \u201cWhen something is uncertain, violates our prediction, like a sudden unexpected dead end, or is in conflict, like when the walls are moving faster or slower than our body movement tells us they should be, this can create discomfort, unease, and a loss in certainty,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHaunted spaces\u201d exploit this predictive system with corridors that loop back on themselves, random dead ends, or perfectly symmetrical junctions. Brendon Burton<\/p>\n<p><b>Ancient instincts are at play<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Our most primal survival systems evolved to spot danger and seek safety\u2014and \u201chaunted spaces\u201d exploit both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Unusually large rooms, such as a 40-foot atrium or a grand ballroom, trigger unease as the brain struggles to gauge scale and locate potential threats. Add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2075-5309\/14\/2\/337\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:echoes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">echoes<\/a>, and the effect deepens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAn echo means sound is coming from multiple directions with slight delays, making it harder to pinpoint sources\u2014including potential dangers,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esteky.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sina Esteky;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sina Esteky<\/a>, assistant professor of marketing at Miami University and a behavioral scientist and design researcher. \u201cMoreover, the acoustic properties of large spaces can make familiar sounds seem alien or distorted.\u201d Because sensory systems go into overdrive, you remain in a mild state of vigilance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Confined spaces create a different kind of stress. \u201cIn cramped environments, these systems detect reduced navigational options and limited escape routes, which can activate stress responses even when there\u2019s no actual danger,\u201d Esteky explains. \u201cFrom an evolutionary perspective, being trapped historically meant vulnerability to predators, environmental hazards, or hostile encounters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This instinct ties into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0272494424001178\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:prospect-refuge theory;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">prospect-refuge theory<\/a>, which holds that humans prefer spaces offering both a wide view (prospect) and a sheltered, safe spot (refuge). Staircases exemplify these ancient reflexes. \u201cStairs can be thought of as architectural elements that echo ancient topographies of risk,\u201d says Tauke. \u201cSteep drops reference cliffs, hills, and even traps into which one falls. Curvature and L-shapes <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1037\/xlm0000082\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:obstruct our view of predators;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">obstruct our view of predators<\/a>. No rails suggest a lack of graspable vegetation or rock edges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Descending a staircase makes the dynamic even clearer. At the top, there\u2019s a sense of control. Midway down, the unknown below and behind erases that sense of refuge. At the bottom, relief can return as the brain once again confirms stability and escape routes, says Tauke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The same principle applies to windowless rooms. Without external views, we lose spatial and temporal cues, including daylight, weather, and escape options. \u201cWindowless rooms eliminate this prospect, creating a sense of being cut off from the broader world and unable to assess external conditions or threats,\u201d says Esteky. This separation from the outside world amplifies feelings of enclosure, mild claustrophobia, or anxiety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Recognizing how profoundly space shapes emotion, architects and neuroscientists are now designing buildings that deliberately influence mood\u2014soothing hospitals, calming transit hubs, even workplaces meant to reduce sensory overload.
