With an estimated budget of $220 million, Tron: Ares needs to make at least double that to be considered somewhat profitable. Released on October 10, Tron: Ares opened to $33.5 million domestically and $60.5 million globally. These figures are well below the initial projections of $45 million domestically and $90 million globally.

To date, Tron: Ares has grossed $124 million worldwide. Estimates have the movie stalling at $160 million. If that happens, the third Tron movie is expected to net a loss of $132.7 million for Disney.

What did Jeff Bridges say about the box office failure of Tron: Ares?

Bridges, who played Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares, recently spoke about the discouraging opening and how it should not be the only factor in a movie’s perception. Bridges compared Tron: Ares to another famous flop and how time can change the narrative.

“It’s interesting, though, how movies are received at opening weekend,” Bridges told Entertainment Weekly. “I remember Heaven’s Gate was considered, you know, very disappointing or a flop, but nowadays it’s considered kind of a masterpiece.”

Bridges noted that Heaven’s Gate still has special screenings in theaters today. “It’s interesting how things can grow on you,” Bridges said.

Released in 1980, Heaven’s Gate was an epic Western and Michael Cimino’s follow-up to The Deer Hunter. Critics destroyed Heaven’s Gate, and the movie made $3.5 million on a $44 million budget. Since the initial failure, Heaven’s Gate has been reassessed in a more favorable light, with a re-edit of the film garnering a positive response.

“Even as an individual, often, I have not liked a movie,” Bridges added. “And then a couple weeks or months later, I’ll see it again. I’ll say, ‘What was I thinking?’ As the Dude would say, ‘That’s just, like, your opinion, man.’”

Tron: Ares is still in theaters.

In the wake of Tron: Ares’ underperformance, Jeff Bridges shared an interesting perspective on box office failures.
