Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> TD Rose Conway-Walsh<\/a> has said the next president should be \u201creally up for the job\u201d of reunifying the island of Ireland, adding that she was \u201cabsolutely\u201d that kind of person.<\/p>\n

Ms Conway-Walsh, who represents the Mayo constituency, confirmed she has been approached by people within her party, as reported by The Irish Times on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

She said it is an \u201dhonour for anyone to be considered to be president of our country\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, she declined to say whether she is willing to seek a nomination. Ms Conway-Walsh said she is very busy in her role as the party\u2019s spokeswoman on enterprise, tourism and employment. <\/p>\n

In an interview with RT\u00c9\u2019s Drivetime, she declined to say whether she would consider running in the election<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Outlining what qualities her party would seek, Ms Conway-Walsh said anyone Sinn F\u00e9in backs for the \u00c1ras must be a \u201cunited Ireland\u201d candidate. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have our own process going on. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s about individuals. [Sinn F\u00e9in] has done an extensive consultation within the party.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she sees the presidential role as \u201cabsolutely key\u201d and an important soft power. \u201cWe are facing constitutional change in this country. We also need the voting franchise, presidential voting rights, to be extended to our citizens in the North.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a serious role for a president here, and that\u2019s why we are giving it so much consideration within the party, and we will make the right decision at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Conway-Walsh said the person needs to be \u201creally up for the job of reunifying our country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked whether she is that type of person, she said: \u201cAbsolutely I am. I will always be that, whether I\u2019m inside or outside politics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe we should be in charge of our own affairs. I believe now the time is right for that. We saw the impacts of Brexit. We have seen the instability in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a wonderful island with wonderful people. We can be doing so much better.
