Local councillor for Limerick City, Elena Secas, has resigned from the Labour Party.<\/p>\n
The Limerick City East councillor said her decision was caused by having \u201cvery little support\u201d from the Labour Party, in particular during the 2024 local elections.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Live 95 News earlier today, she said that \u201cthings haven\u2019t changed since the last election\u201d and she can no longer \u201ccontinue to fly the party flag on her own\u201d.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Labour Party told the Irish Independent: \u201cThe Labour Party thanks Cllr Secas for her work proudly representing the Party since being first elected in 2014.<\/p>\n
“We wish her well for the future,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n
Councillor Secas was first elected to the Limerick City and County Council in 2014, when she became the first non-national councillor in Limerick.<\/p>\n
Ms Secas, who lives in Castletroy, was later re-elected in 2019 and in 2024.<\/p>\n
She is originally from Moldova and has been living in Limerick with her family since 2001.<\/p>\n
Ms Secas, who has been a member of the Labour Party for nearly 20 years, will now serve on the Limerick Council as an independent councillor.<\/p>\n
In a post on X, fellow Limerick councillor Elisa O\u2019Donovan described Ms Secas as an \u201cincredible councillor\u201d and a \u201cwonderful colleague\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is a huge loss to the Labour Party.
