Its earliest acquisition\u2014New Jersey colonial governor Jonathan Belcher\u2019s gift, in 1755, of \u201cmy own Picture at full length in a gilt Frame\u201d\u2014was soon joined by a portrait of England\u2019s King George II and, later, Charles Willson Peale\u2019s \u201cGeorge Washington at the Battle of Princeton\u201d (1783-84). Owing to that battle and two devastating fires, however, little from those early years remains in the Princeton University Art Museum, which, formally established in 1882, first opened in 1874 with fewer than 3,000 objects\u2014and could only be seen by unanticipated visitors if they applied to a janitor for the key.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-16aepit e1jdulti0\">Copyright \u00a92025 Dow Jones &amp; Company, Inc.
