{"id":153128,"date":"2025-10-30T10:26:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T10:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/153128\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T10:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T10:26:07","slug":"donald-trump-says-rare-earths-dispute-settled-after-meeting-chinas-xi-jinping-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/153128\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump says rare earths dispute \u2018settled\u2019 after meeting China\u2019s Xi Jinping \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> has cut tariffs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\">China<\/a> by 10 per cent with immediate effect following what he called an \u201camazing\u201d 100-minute meeting  with Xi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/xi-jinping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/xi-jinping\/\">Jinping<\/a> in the South Korean port city of Busan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The  US president said his Chinese counterpart agreed to pause controls on exports of rare earths for a year and to resume Chinese purchases of American soybeans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump said he was halving a 20 per cent levy imposed on China on account of its alleged failure to halt the export of chemicals used to produce the drug fentanyl. He said the cut, which brings the tariff on China to 47 per cent, followed a promise by Mr Xi to \u201cwork very hard\u201d to address the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was an amazing meeting,\u201d Mr Trump said. \u201cI guess on the scale from zero to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In early comments, Chinese state media reported Mr Xi as saying a \u201cconsensus\u201d with Mr Trump had been reached on trade issues, and that there were good prospects for co-operation on trade, immigration and fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US president said  Mr Xi agreed to a one-year deal that would see China pause sweeping controls on the export of rare earths used in the manufacture of everything from cars and aircraft to consumer electronics. China has a near-monopoly on the minerals, refining 90 per cent of the world\u2019s supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">China has also agreed to start buying soybeans from the US after an effective boycott of the oilseed since the beginning of this year. China bought almost half of the US crop last year and reopening the market was a key demand of American farmers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump said  he and the Chinese premier had discussed the issue of semiconductors and US restrictions on the sale to China of the most advanced microchips. He said Beijing would have to negotiate with semiconductor manufacturer Nvidia but he indicated that the company\u2019s latest Blackwell chips were not discussed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/2025\/10\/26\/donald-trump-vs-xi-jinping-who-holds-the-stronger-hand\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump vs Xi Jinping: who holds the stronger hand?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the start of the meeting, Mr Xi described the US and China as \u201cpartners and friends\u201d, telling Mr Trump that China\u2019s development went hand in hand with the ambition to \u201cmake America great again\u201d. But he said it was normal for the world\u2019s two biggest economies to experience friction from time to time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur two countries are fully able to help each other succeed and prosper together. I have stated in public many times that China and the US should be partners and friends. This is what history taught us and reality demands,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Xi praised Mr Trump\u2019s involvement in efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\">achieve peace in Gaza <\/a>and to end a border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. And he suggested that Beijing and Washington could work together to address global issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMr President, you care a lot about world peace and you\u2019re very enthusiastic about settling various regional hotspot issues,\u201d Mr Xi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe world today is confronted with many tough problems. China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as big countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world. I look forward to exchanging views with you on questions important for our two countries and the world.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump said that the two leaders discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> during their meeting although he appears not to have asked Mr Xi to buy less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russian<\/a> oil. It said both teams now had to refine and finalise the agreement as soon as possible so they can deliver on it and boost both economies and that of the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEconomic and trade relations should continue to be the ballast and engine of Sino-US relations, not a stumbling block or point of conflict. Both sides should consider the long-term benefits of co-operation and avoid falling into a vicious cycle of mutual retaliation,\u201d the Chinese readout said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cXi Jinping emphasised that dialogue is better than confrontation.
