Researchers have now shown this surprising viral protection can be replicated in mice and hamsters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have yet to find a virus that can break through the therapy&#8217;s defenses [in cell culture tests],&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/one-universal-antiviral-rule-them-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Columbia University immunologist Dusan Bogunovic, who first discovered this unusual antiviral superpower <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.1224026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">13 years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mutation, a deficiency in interferon-stimulated gene 15 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ISG15\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ISG15<\/a>), causes a mild yet persistent inflammation across the body. Examining patients&#8217; immune cells revealed they&#8217;d had the usual run of encounters with  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-influenza\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"103478\" data-postid=\"171703\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">flu<\/a>, measles, chickenpox, and mumps, yet they&#8217;d never reported feeling particularly ill as a result.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/which-infectious-disease-could-be-the-biggest-problem-in-2025-an-expert-explains\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Which Infectious Disease Could Be The Biggest Problem in 2025? An Expert Explains<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further investigation revealed their body&#8217;s virus-fighting proteins were constantly on a low level alert, never really put away for later like in most people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the back of my mind, I kept thinking that if we could produce this type of light immune activation in other people, we could protect them from just about any virus,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/one-universal-antiviral-rule-them-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Bogunovic.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Bogunovic and colleagues have used technology similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-who-made-covid-vaccine-possible-awarded-nobel-prize\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mRNA vaccines<\/a> to provide a temporary ISG15 deficiency in lab animals. The therapy provides instructions that help target cells build 10 proteins that the team identified as primarily responsible for the antiviral effects.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/mRNATranslationProcess-642x642-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rare Mutation Seems to Make People Impervious to Viruses\" width=\"588\" height=\"456\" class=\"wp-image-171750 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The technology uses our body&#8217;s natural ability to build proteins from mRNA instructions. (Ali Damouh\/Science Photo Library\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, the bodies of test mice and hamsters successfully created more of these proteins, which attack the viruses at multiple stages of their life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then challenged the vaccinated animals with  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/coronavirus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73041\" data-postid=\"171703\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">SARS-CoV-2<\/a>. The protective proteins restricted the infection, but did not appear to interfere with the rest of the animals&#8217; immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We only generate a small amount of these 10 proteins, for a very short time, and that leads to much less inflammation than what we see in ISG15-deficient individuals,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/one-universal-antiviral-rule-them-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Bogunovic. &#8220;But that inflammation is enough to prevent [viral] diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The effects of inoculation were temporary, lasting up to four days. That might not sound like long enough to be very useful as a vaccine platform, but it could be administered as short-term protection for healthcare workers, even before vaccines targeting specific viruses have been developed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe the technology will work even if we don&#8217;t know the identity of the virus,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/one-universal-antiviral-rule-them-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Bogunovic.<\/p>\n<p>This technique has the potential to massively boost our responses during future pandemics that may be similar to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/coronavirus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73041\" data-postid=\"171703\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">COVID-19<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spanish-flu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish Flu<\/a>, which have killed millions of people at a time.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is still in the extremely early stages of testing. There are many challenges to resolve around how to safely deliver the mRNA to where it&#8217;s needed in humans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once the therapy reaches our cells, it works, but the delivery of any nucleic acid, DNA or RNA, into the part of the body you want to protect is currently the biggest challenge in the field,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuimc.columbia.edu\/news\/one-universal-antiviral-rule-them-all\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">qualifies<\/a> Bogunovic.<\/p>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7309755\/cutting-mrna-research-deadly-mistake\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">political and social pushback<\/a> against mRNA technology may also prove to be a large hurdle.
