{"id":153329,"date":"2025-10-30T12:52:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T12:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/153329\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T12:52:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T12:52:08","slug":"approval-granted-for-luas-extension-to-finglas-in-dublin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/153329\/","title":{"rendered":"Approval granted for Luas extension to Finglas in Dublin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la has approved the extension of the Luas network in north Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>The project will involve the construction of tracks between the existing Green Line terminus at Broombridge and a new terminus at Charlestown in Finglas.<\/p>\n<p>There will be four stops \u2013 St Helena&#8217;s, Finglas village, St Margaret\u2019s Road and Charlestown \u2013 along the 3.9km route.<\/p>\n<p>A park-and-ride facility will be provided at the St Margaret\u2019s Road stop, close to the M50 and N2 roads.<\/p>\n<p>The extension will serve an estimated population of 56,000 by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>A morning rush hour journey time of around 30 minutes is anticipated between Charlestown and Trinity College. It currently takes about 44 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0014e4c7-614.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Railway Order granted by the An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la contains 12 conditions, mainly relating to environmental issues.<\/p>\n<p>In its decision, the commission said that the &#8220;positive long-term impacts&#8221; of the project include the provision of faster and more reliable public transport services, improved pedestrian and cyclist safety and reduced traffic congestion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An artists' impression of the new Luas line to and from Finglas in Dublin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/002365f4-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe extension will serve an estimated population of 56,000 by 2035<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Transport Darragh O&#8217;Brien said the approval of the scheme means that it can &#8220;progress towards procurement and construction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, he said: &#8220;This is a major milestone in expanding Dublin\u2019s public transport network.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Luas Finglas will offer thousands of Dubliners a fast, reliable, sustainable way to get around the city, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The additional cycle and pedestrian facilities involved in the project will offer even more sustainable and active transport options.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By reducing journey times, the project will also support the development of housing and businesses along the route.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Plans for the extension of the Luas system to Finglas were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/dublin\/2020\/0728\/1155945-luas-extension-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first announced by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the National Transport Authority in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la has approved the extension of the Luas network in north Dublin.
