The Coalition wants the bill to be more business friendly and the Greens seek stricter environmental protection.

Watt, from the centre-left Labor party, said he was negotiating with both.

The Business Council of Australia welcomed the reform as an opportunity to fix a broken system but its CEO, Bran Black, said changes, including greater clarity around greenhouse gas reporting requirements, were needed to make sure it works for the economy and the environment.

Watt said the bill aimed to provide clear definitions of “unacceptable impacts” and higher penalties for breaches. It would also establish an independent National Environmental Protection Agency to enforce rules.

Clean Energy Council CEO Jackie Trad called it a step in the right direction. Renewable energy project approval times have blown out in recent years.

“We cannot afford to wait another five years to secure this,” Trad said.

($1 = 1.5389 Australian dollars)

Reporting by Peter Hobson in Canberra and Helen Clark in Sydney; Additional reporting by Melanie Burton; Editing by Kim Coghill and Stephen Coates

Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab

Purchase Licensing Rights

CANBERRA/SYDNEY, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Australia’s government on Thursday introduced an environmental protection bill into parliament that it…

[269
82567,2786,82708,82709,82760,82794,82762,89882,89883,82543,82538,82545,88440,82546,83395,82535,82549,82541,82550,82553,83396,82536,83397,82580,82711,82555,82547,82557,82537,82540,82554,82552,83394,82551,18,83599,83600,83601,82571,440,45748,19,82505,17,83119,4164,84449,82574,83602,82508,82756,86741,133,15170,82534,82564,82533,82771
post-153716","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-anim","tag-asia","tag-au","tag-aunz","tag-clc","tag-clj","tag-clr","tag-coen","tag-coen1","tag-destabn","tag-destabx","tag-destafa","tag-destauf","tag-destbnx","tag-destc","tag-destcsa","tag-destdnp","tag-deste","tag-destfun","tag-destgns","tag-destgro","tag-destlby","tag-destmtl","tag-destortagm","tag-destousesg","tag-destpco","tag-destpsc","tag-destrbn","tag-destreulb","tag-destrnp","tag-destrws","tag-destrwsa","tag-destsof","tag-destucdptest","tag-eire","tag-ener","tag-enff","tag-eng","tag-env","tag-environment","tag-gen","tag-ie","tag-inds","tag-ireland","tag-iser","tag-law","tag-min","tag-natu","tag-oilg","tag-pol","tag-rsbiclimate-change","tag-rulesworld-australia","tag-science","tag-sustainable-business","tag-topcmb","tag-topicreuters-impact-top-stories","tag-topnws","tag-wrm
["GET
