\n\tCharlie Sheen<\/a> recently appeared on \u201cIn Depth With Graham Bensinger\u201d<\/a> and reflected on being dropped from 1989\u2019s \u201cBorn on the Fourth of July<\/a>\u201d so that it could become a Tom Cruise<\/a> star vehicle. Sheen said he had been in talks with his \u201cPlatoon\u201d director Oliver Stone about reuniting on the movie, which tells the true story of Vietnam War veteran Ron Kovic and how he became an anti-war advocate after being paralyzed in battle. Sheen had no idea Stone was changing course until Sheen\u2019s brother, Emilio Estevez, cold-called him one night.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEmilio, he calls me. He says, \u2018Hey, man. You sitting down?\u2019 And I think somebody died, right?\u201d Sheen said (via EW<\/a>). \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018No, what\u2019s going on?\u201d He says, \u2018Cruise is doing\u00a0\u201cBorn on the Fourth.\u201d\u2018 I love that Emilio thought that I needed to be seated to get news he thought was going to make me faint. I mean, what are we doing here? It\u2019s a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEven if it\u2019s just a movie, Sheen acknowledged being dropped for Cruise was \u201ca big deal,\u201d adding: \u201cIt was also the betrayal factor of it. So I was like, \u2018OK, all right.\u2019 You know, Oliver\u2019s been a fan of Tom\u2019s for a long time. It\u2019s a different movie if Tom does it than if I do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSheen said the news of Cruise\u2019s casting came after he \u201chad meetings about\u201d the movie with Stone, with the duo even having dinner with the real Ron Kovic. \u201cAnd then I stopped hearing from him,\u201d Sheen said of Stone. \u201cWe stopped talking about it, and I reach out to Oliver, and I\u2019m told that he\u2019s in Cuba. Whatever. This is like 1988 or \u201989, right? I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, well, tell him I\u2019m looking for him.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt wasn\u2019t until much later that Sheen got the chance to confront Stone about the betrayal when they both ended up in the same bar, explaining: \u201cI was drunk enough and he was drunk enough for that thing to finally be brought up. And he was like, \u2018I just felt like you didn\u2019t have any passion for it. I felt like you lost interest.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, I didn\u2019t see you. How do you know how much passion I lost or interest that evaporated if we never talked about it again?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSheen is no longer bitter about how things went down, noting: \u201cYou can\u2019t lose something you never had. I didn\u2019t sign a contract. There was a handshake.\u201d And he\u2019s not one to talk negatively about Cruise, who scored the first Oscar nomination of his career for \u201cBorn on the Fourth of July.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like a thing where I\u2019m going to talk shit about him, because then you see the movie and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, OK. All right. He turned it into that,’\u201d Sheen said. \u201cWhen someone gets a job and does that with it, you\u2019re just like, of course. You don\u2019t sit there and dissect it and like, \u2018I\u2019d have done that better.\u2019 No, go fuck yourself. That\u2019s a brilliant [performance] \u2014 and you should have won the freaking Oscar.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise\u2019s Oscar nom was one of eight Academy Award nominations earned by \u201cBorn on the Fourth of July.\u201d The film was also nominated for best picture and won Stone the best director prize. The movie was a box office hit with $162 million worldwide.<\/p>\n
