{"id":154104,"date":"2025-10-30T21:56:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T21:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/154104\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T21:56:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T21:56:09","slug":"terence-crosbie-trial-juries-did-not-hear-of-2017-tweet-about-unreported-rape-capital-of-europe-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/154104\/","title":{"rendered":"Terence Crosbie trial juries did not hear of 2017 tweet about \u2018unreported rape capital of Europe\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jurors in the trials of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> firefighter ultimately convicted of rape were not privy to all of the evidence the prosecution sought to introduce, a court heard in a sentencing hearing in Boston, Massachusetts, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Terence Crosbie (39) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/10\/24\/dublin-firefighter-found-guilty-of-rape-in-boston-hotel-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/10\/24\/dublin-firefighter-found-guilty-of-rape-in-boston-hotel-room\/\">found guilty<\/a> by a jury of six men and six women of raping a sleeping attorney in a room he shared with a colleague, Liam O\u2019Brien, and was sentenced to seven to nine years in prison \u2013 exceeding the state\u2019s sentencing guidelines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a previous trial, which concluded in June, the jury was hung.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In both trials, state prosecutors attempted to introduce a Tweet Crosbie posted in 2017 on the social media platform now known as X about travel and \u201cunreported rape\u201d. The post was not introduced before jury, but was heard by judge Joshua Wall in pretrial hearing and again before sentencing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Crosbie\u2019s father, and his wife and mother of his two daughters, were also present throughout both trials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After the sentencing hearing, Crosbie\u2019s attorneys stated that Crosbie was in regular contact with his younger brother, former UFC fighter Kiefer Crosbie, who also wrote a letter in support of his brother before sentencing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph hearing, prosecutor Erin Murphy said Crosbie\u2019s 2017 tweet \u201cthat the court is aware of from pretrial legation\u201d provides insight into his\u201cextremely dangerous and predatory mindset and it also informs what his intent was\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2017, under the handle of @DubKid86, Terence Crosbie posted about an upcoming football match in Stockholm, Sweden, the court heard. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c6 foot blondes and the most unreported rape capital of Europe sure even if it\u2019s Vigo vs Lyon be worth the trip,\u201d Crosbie wrote, followed by a side-eye emoji, Ms Murphy told the court. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time Crosbie authored the post he was a 30-year-old paramedic, Ms Murphy said. \u201cHe wore that mantle and walked around as a purportedly safe person,\u201d she told the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTo put it bluntly most people in society are against rape, they are anti-rape, and here the defendant publicly posted his own public endorsement of rape and even better if he found the woman attractive and thought he might get away with it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe defendant travelled to Boston and he committed a rape that he likely believed would go unreported because he was outside of his community, he was outside of the place where people would recognise him, and he chose a sleeping stranger,\u201d she argued, asking the court for a nine to twelve year sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Murphy told the court  the individuals who submitted more than 80 pages of letters in support of Crosbie\u2019s character, including multiple members of the Dublin fire brigade, only know \u201cone side of the defendant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Defence attorney Daniel C Reilly described the social media post as \u201can eight-year-old tweet that was admittedly detestable but is not reflective of the man he is and has been, which is more accurately captured in those letters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Joshua Wall interjected to state that \u201cfortunately\u201d there \u201care not many people\u201d who would write such a message. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Reilly stated that he \u201ccannot speak to Boston. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After the hearing and conferring with his client, Mr Reilly told The Irish Times: \u201cLosing the case is a huge disappointment and then to have a sentence that exceeded the guidelines is obviously very disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Crosbie is \u201cjust trying to wrap his head around\u201d the sentence and what that \u201clooks like in terms of when he might actually be able to get home to his family\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Crosbie continues to insist he is not guilty, his attorneys said. \u201cI think they sent an innocent man to jail,\u201d defence attorney Patrick Garrity said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Garrity also said Kiefer Crosbie, who did not attend proceedings, has been \u201cinvested the whole time\u201d in his \u201cbrother\u2019s wellbeing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a letter to the judge, Kiefer Crosbie wrote his older brother is a \u201cwell respected member of our community and has so much support and love from everybody\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe is an amazing father,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHe is the godfather for one of my children and one of the very few people I would trust wholeheartedly.
