{"id":156225,"date":"2025-11-01T00:26:17","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T00:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156225\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T00:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T00:26:17","slug":"fear-of-another-crash-keeps-irish-returning-from-australia-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156225\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear of another crash keeps Irish returning from Australia &#8211; doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fear of another economic crash keeps Irish people from returning home from Australia, an Irish doctor has argued.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Government has recently spent over \u20ac500,000 on advertising in order to encourage Irish workers in Canada and Australia to come home and work in construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/lunchtime-live-234859\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lunchtime Live<\/strong><\/a>, Dr Ray O\u2019Sullivan, who previously worked Down Under, explained the simple reason why so many Irish want to stay there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cAustralia hasn\u2019t had a recession for 40 years [outside of COVID],\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve had economic growth year on year\u2026 Asia woke up and become a big market for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve made lots of money.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2157292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/3AP8FFN.jpg\" alt=\"Koala, Phascolarctos cinereus, in its natural habitat on a eucalyptus tree, Australia, Oceania\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1440\"\/> Koala. Picture by: Alamy.com.<\/p>\n<p>Dr O\u2019Sullivan added that this means Irish people \u201cdon\u2019t have to worry\u201d about losing their jobs in another crash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do it right,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, even just the day to day living out there; it might be expensive in Sydney and Melbourne &#8211; equivalent to Dublin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know there won\u2019t be a downturn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr O\u2019Sullivan predicted there would always be a \u201cbig, bright future\u201d in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ireland, there\u2019s doubt,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill we get it wrong again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2155870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2W982DD.jpg\" alt=\"2W982DD Sydney, Australia. 25th December 2023. Picture by: Richard Milnes\/Alamy Live News<\/p>\n<p>Also on the programme, plumber Martin said life in Ireland is too expensive to lure many workers back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know people who came back; they came here from Australia two years ago,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey bought a house out where I\u2019m living and they\u2019re selling up again, they\u2019re going back to Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s way too expensive, they can\u2019t afford it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main image: A ghost estate and a kangaroo.
