{"id":156463,"date":"2025-11-01T04:03:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156463\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T04:03:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:03:10","slug":"ex-partner-of-sinn-fein-mep-kathleen-funchion-appeals-severity-of-sentence-on-harassment-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156463\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-partner of Sinn F\u00e9in MEP Kathleen Funchion appeals severity of sentence on harassment charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A judge has agreed to seek a probation report following the appeal of a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/courtandcrime\/arid-41622130.html\"> four-month prison sentence<\/a> given to the former partner of Sinn F\u00e9in MEP Kathleen Funchion under <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-40225796.html\"> Coco&#8217;s Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Se\u00e1n Tyrrell, of 31 Cypress Grove, Loughboy, Kilkenny, was given a four-month custodial sentence, with a separate four-month jail term suspended for two years, for offences under Section 4 of the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">On Friday, Kilkenny District Court heard a severity-only appeal, with Tyrrell\u2019s barrister calling for a probation report to be completed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The court heard Tyrell was a Sinn F\u00e9in party volunteer in 2016 when Ms Funchion was contesting the general election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He worked in her constituency office, and they entered a \u201cfractious\u201d romantic relationship. They became engaged in December 2017. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The relationship broke down in July 2019, but the couple reconciled several months later and remained together until April 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The court heard Tyrrell developed unfounded \u201ctrust issues&#8221;. He requested access to Ms Funchion\u2019s phone and email, and asked her to take lie detector tests. She was also falsely accused of infidelity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In August 2022, an email address linked to Tyrrell by garda\u00ed contacted a journalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Screenshots of these emails were sent to Ms Funchion, and she was informed if she did not take a lie detector test and arrange a meeting for him with Sinn F\u00e9in leader Mary Lou McDonald, he would divulge \u201cembarrassing allegations\u201d to the reporter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Another email from a different address, which was also linked to Tyrrell by garda\u00ed, said the sender would divulge confidential information regarding Ms Funchion\u2019s friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Funchion read a victim impact statement to the court, saying Mr Tyrrell \u201calways had to control the narrative and relationship\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe impact that this has had on the rest of my life is that my life has become a very lonely and isolated place where I have issues trusting others,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI do not allow people into my life, I question everyone&#8217;s motivation that is around me, and I can become incredibly paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She branded Tyrrell\u2019s actions a \u201chorrible betrayal from a person I once loved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The court was told Tyrrell had previous convictions related to road traffic offences. It was argued by the defence a probation report should be completed, saying he was now in full-time employment and was rehabilitating himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Judge Cormac Quinn noted Tyrrell had previously pleaded guilty in the district court and the matter was a severity-only appeal. He agreed to a request for a probation report.
