{"id":156465,"date":"2025-11-01T04:04:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156465\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T04:04:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T04:04:15","slug":"over-16000-people-now-living-in-homeless-accommodation-across-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156465\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 16,000 people now living in homeless accommodation across Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\" data-testid=\"title-summary\">\u2018It is nothing short of shameful that more than 16,614 are currently living through the nightmare of homelessness\u2019 \u2013 Dublin Simon Community11, 952 people are homeless in Dublin \u2013 12pc rise year-on-year\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The startling figure has prompted renewed calls for urgent, integrated action as the Government prepares to publish its new national housing plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Figures for September released by the Department of Housing show that 11,952 people are currently without a home in Dublin alone, a 12pc rise on the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The latest data also includes 1,732 families and 3,887 children living in emergency accommodation in the capital, figures that do not account for those sleeping rough, staying in domestic violence shelters, or those in so-called hidden homelessness, people sleeping in tents, cars, or on couches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Catherine Kenny, CEO of Dublin Simon Community, said the figures highlighted \u201cthe urgent need for a comprehensive housing plan that combines housing, health and social supports to help people leave homelessness for good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThese are probably the last set of figures to be announced prior to the Government launching a new housing plan,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is nothing short of shameful that more than 16,614 are currently living through the nightmare of homelessness, with 11,952 in Dublin alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cEvery number represents a person without the security of a home. We cannot afford further delays, the time for action is now. The Government must publish this in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop5 indo-26838ee5_paddingbottom3 indo-26838ee5_paddingleft7 indo-26838ee5_paddingright5 indo-26838ee5_paddingtop3 indo-b184cee3_openquote\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--color-primary-base);border-left-style:solid;border-left-width:0\" data-testid=\"inline-quote\">\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_medium indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0\" style=\"color:var(--color-black-base)\">These people need directed measures that can help them to exit homelessness<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Ms Kenny said while she welcomed recent measures to accelerate building and increase housing supply, they offered \u201clittle comfort\u201d to those currently living without a home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThese people need directed measures that can help them to exit homelessness in the foreseeable future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Dublin Simon has called for the new housing plan to prioritise social and affordable housing supply until it reaches at least 20pc of the national housing stock, with a fifth of allocations reserved for people experiencing long-term homelessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">It also wants additional resources for Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs), reforms to capital funding models, and faster planning processes to deliver social homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Meanwhile, the Salvation Army has warned that teenagers are becoming the \u201cforgotten generation\u201d of homelessness, saying life in emergency accommodation is severely restricting for young people at a crucial stage of development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThe focus tends to fall on adults and small children, but teenagers find emergency accommodation a particular struggle,\u201d said Anthony Byrne, service manager at Houben House in Harold\u2019s Cross.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cThe normal rites of passage, such as a need for extra privacy, the ability to socialise and have their friends around, dating and relationships, very often do not apply to them.
