{"id":156980,"date":"2025-11-01T11:08:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T11:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156980\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T11:08:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T11:08:11","slug":"cuts-to-us-fentanyl-tariffs-help-chinese-exporters-close-the-gap-on-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156980\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuts to US \u2018fentanyl tariffs\u2019 help Chinese exporters close the gap on competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">With the US cutting its tariffs on Chinese imports by 10 per cent \u2013 halving a duty initially imposed by Washington over allegations of complicity in the fentanyl trade \u2013 analysts said the reduction may further strengthen the competitiveness of Chinese exporters, particularly in mass-produced goods.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Following a meeting on Thursday between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in South Korea, the world\u2019s two largest economies reached a consensus on the issue, with the US agreeing to remove half of its 20 per cent in fentanyl-related tariffs on China, effective immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The 90-day pause on tariff increases the two sides agreed to during trade talks in May, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3321502\/trump-extends-us-tariff-truce-china-cnbc-reports?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">extended by another 90 days<\/a> in August, was also lengthened after this week\u2019s meeting, this time for one year.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">That brings overall US tariffs on Chinese goods to 47 per cent, down from the previous 57 per cent, Trump told reporters on Air Force One after the summit.
