{"id":156992,"date":"2025-11-01T11:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T11:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156992\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T11:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T11:15:08","slug":"satellite-images-suggest-mass-killings-in-sudanese-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/156992\/","title":{"rendered":"Satellite images suggest mass killings in Sudanese city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New satellite imagery suggests that mass killings are likely continuing in and around the Sudanese city of El-Fasher, researchers said, days after it fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.<\/p>\n<p>At war with the regular army since April 2023, the RSF seized El-Fasher on Sunday, pushing the army out its last stronghold in the western Darfur region after an 18-month siege.<\/p>\n<p>Since the city&#8217;s fall, reports have emerged of summary executions, sexual violence, attacks on aid workers, looting and abductions, while communications remain largely cut off.<\/p>\n<p>A report by Yale University&#8217;s Humanitarian Research Lab yesterday said fresh images gave them reason to believe much of the population may be &#8220;dead, captured, or in hiding&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The lab identified at least 31 clusters of objects consistent with human bodies between Monday and yesterday, across neighbourhoods, university grounds and military sites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indicators that mass killing is continuing are clearly visible,&#8221; the lab said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An infographic titled \" attacks=\"\" against=\"\" civilians=\"\" in=\"\" sudan=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/00236886-614.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Survivors from El-Fasher who reached the nearby town of Tawila have told of mass killings, children shot before their parents, and civilians beaten and robbed as they fled.<\/p>\n<p>Hayat, a mother of five who fled El-Fasher, said that &#8220;young men travelling with us were stopped&#8221; along the way by paramilitaries and &#8220;we don&#8217;t know what happened to them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The UN said more than 65,000 people have fled El-Fasher but tens of thousands remain trapped.<\/p>\n<p>Around 260,000 people were in the city before the RSF&#8217;s final assault.<\/p>\n<p>The RSF claimed to have arrested several fighters accused of abuses on Thursday, but UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher questioned the RSF&#8217;s commitment to investigate violations.<\/p>\n<p>Both the RSF and the army have faced war crimes accusations over the course of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>El-Fasher&#8217;s capture gives the RSF full control over all five state capitals in Darfur, effectively splitting Sudan along an east-west axis, with the army controlling the north, east and centre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New satellite imagery suggests that mass killings are likely continuing in and around the Sudanese city of El-Fasher,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":156993,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[41],"tags":[9,10,13,14,6,11,12,15,16,5,7,8,65,66,67],"class_list":{"0":"post-156992","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-world","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-featured-news","11":"tag-featurednews","12":"tag-headlines","13":"tag-latest-news","14":"tag-latestnews","15":"tag-main-news","16":"tag-mainnews","17":"tag-news","18":"tag-top-stories","19":"tag-topstories","20":"tag-world","21":"tag-world-news","22":"tag-worldnews"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/115474159033260823","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/156992","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=156992"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/156992\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/156993"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=156992"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=156992"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=156992"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
