title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/today-fm\/\">Today FM<\/a> broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/matt-cooper\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/matt-cooper\/\">Matt Cooper<\/a> has been ended \u201cwith immediate effect\u201d after it emerged he had coached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a> during the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">presidential race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> minister became a prominent figure in the campaign after he said that Fine Gael \u201cshould smear the bejaysus\u201d out of Independent candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It emerged in The Irish Independent on Saturday that Mr Yates played a significant role in preparing Mr Gavin for the first presidential TV debate, though he had less to do with the Fianna F\u00e1il candidate\u2019s second debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, his undeclared involvement with Fianna F\u00e1il caused difficulties for the creators of the Path to Power podcast, Today FM broadcaster Matt Cooper and NK Productions, owned by agent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/noel-kelly-agent\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/noel-kelly-agent\/\">Noel Kelly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Saturday afternoon, the two said they had \u201ctaken the decision to end Ivan\u2019s role as co-host of Path To Power with immediate effect\u201d following the disclosure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNeither Matt Cooper nor NK Productions were aware that Ivan was working on the campaign, and both believe that this information should have been shared with the audience of the podcast when the presidential election was <a href=\"\" rel=\"\">being discussed<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking on Saturday, Mr Cooper said: \u201cWhile we have always been aware of Ivan\u2019s commercial activities, his decision not to advise us that he was actively engaged in the presidential election on behalf of one of the parties is disappointing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHad he shared that information with us, we would have made sure that our audience was aware of the matter when we were discussing the election,\u201d the broadcaster said in a statement, which followed a conversation with Mr Yates on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former Fine Gael minister\u2019s unwanted \u201cbejaysus\u201d advice to Fine Gael, his former political party, was seized upon by the Connolly campaign, even though he had no role in the Fine Gael campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the Connolly campaign argued that it highlighted the nature of the campaign that Fine Gael itself had run. \u201cIn relation to the politics of fear, I think Ivan Yates did us a favour in articulating what happened,\u201d the president-elect said after the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Yates, it emerged today, had recently advised the Path to Power team that he intended to quit the popular podcast in the new year to pursue other projects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nevertheless, Mr Cooper and NK Productions said they had taken the decision that in light of the disclosure about Mr Yates\u2019s involvement with the Fianna F\u00e1il campaign, his role as a co-host would end immediately.<\/p>\n<p
