{"id":157427,"date":"2025-11-01T17:17:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T17:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/157427\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T17:17:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T17:17:47","slug":"fastway-staff-left-without-pay-while-up-to-50000-packages-yet-to-be-returned-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/157427\/","title":{"rendered":"Fastway staff left without pay while up to 50,000 packages yet to be returned \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Up to 50,000 packages in the possession of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fastway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fastway\/\">Fastway<\/a> Couriers will be returned to the businesses that sent them over the next two weeks after the company went into receivership on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, staff are in limbo, unable to apply for social welfare for the next month but not being paid by the courier firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Receivers Mark Degnan and Brendan O\u2019Reilly of Interpath Advisory are currently overseeing an operation where all packages and parcels in Fastway\u2019s possession are being transported from 20 depots around the State to the group\u2019s main hub in Portarlington, Co Laois.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The packages will then be returned to senders but this process could take up to two weeks. Retailers will then be responsible for rearranging delivery to purchasers of the good. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood that some businesses have been told they should be able to collect products from the courier as early as next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, staff, who only found out their jobs were at risk when told to stop work on Tuesday, have been informed that they will not be paid for their final week of work pending a 30-day statutory consultation period before any claims can be made to the State\u2019s Insolvency Payments Scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/10\/30\/revenue-promises-pragmatic-approach-for-fastway-contractors-with-cashflow-issues\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Revenue promises \u2018pragmatic\u2019 approach for Fastway contractors with cashflow issuesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They will remain as employees of the company during the period and will thus be ineligible for jobseeker\u2019s benefit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey were told they cannot sign on for 30 days or look for employment as they are still technically employed,\u201d said a close family member of one of the workers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely desperate for families just seven weeks before Christmas. If they sign on or take up employment, they have been told they will forfeit their right for wages owed and redundancy where applicable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The receivers are understood to have told staff it will likely be next year before they receive statutory redundancy payments from the State scheme.
