title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> film Steve. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Set in the mid-1990s and directed by Tim Mielants, the movie follows a pivotal day in the life of Steve (Murphy) and his students, who exist in a world that has abandoned them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The drama is a reimagining of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/review\/2023\/04\/08\/shy-by-max-porter-this-is-a-perfect-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/review\/2023\/04\/08\/shy-by-max-porter-this-is-a-perfect-book\/\">Max Porter\u2019s Sunday Times bestseller Shy<\/a>, named after its protagonist, a teenager who boards at the school on a programme for troubled youths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The trailer shows Murphy\u2019s character describing himself to a film crew as \u201cvery, very tired\u201d amid clips of violence among pupils. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">In a voiceover, he adds: \u201cThese are extraordinarily complex young people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Other scenes see Steve speaking to Shy, drinking an unknown substance from a small transparent bottle, and screaming while clenching his fists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio-web\/i-may-destroy-you-smart-sexy-electrifying-and-very-funny-television-1.4275519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio-web\/i-may-destroy-you-smart-sexy-electrifying-and-very-funny-television-1.4275519\">I May Destroy You<\/a> star Jay Lycurgo plays Shy, a troubled teenager who needs to reconcile with his past and control his impulses for self-destruction and violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The movie shows Shy\u2019s interactions with Steve, who in turn is grappling with his mental health as he fights to protect the school from closure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The supporting cast includes Tracey Ullman and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emily-watson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/emily-watson\/\">Emily Watson<\/a>, who starred with Murphy in the Irish drama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2024\/10\/31\/small-things-like-these-deep-dive-character-study-anchored-by-cillian-murphys-fiercely-internalised-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2024\/10\/31\/small-things-like-these-deep-dive-character-study-anchored-by-cillian-murphys-fiercely-internalised-performance\/\">Small Things Like These<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Murphy (49), who is a producer for Steve, won a Bafta and Oscar last year for his title role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christopher-nolan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christopher-nolan\/\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s<\/a> epic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2023\/07\/19\/oppenheimer-cillian-murphy-gives-a-commanding-turn-but-why-is-florence-pugh-reduced-to-crazy-naked-chick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2023\/07\/19\/oppenheimer-cillian-murphy-gives-a-commanding-turn-but-why-is-florence-pugh-reduced-to-crazy-naked-chick\/\">Oppenheimer<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He also plays Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in the hit TV series Peaky Blinders, which is being turned into a film for Netflix and will also star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2023\/11\/15\/saltburn-barry-keoghan-is-excellent-as-a-scouser-among-malign-poshos-at-oxford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2023\/11\/15\/saltburn-barry-keoghan-is-excellent-as-a-scouser-among-malign-poshos-at-oxford\/\">Saltburn\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-keoghan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-keoghan\/\">Barry
