A driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and drug driving after a 77-year-old man died after being hit by a car.<\/p>\n
Emergency services were called to Abingdon Road in Walton, Merseyside, at about 13:25 GMT on Friday to reports that a man had been struck by a silver Audi A3.<\/p>\n
The victim, Daniel Cairney, 77, from Walton, was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later, Merseyside Police said. <\/p>\n
The driver, a 43-year-old man from Huyton, stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning. <\/p>\n
Det Sgt Andy Roper said: “First and foremost, our condolences are with Mr Cairney’s family and friends following this tragic incident.”<\/p>\n
He asked for anyone who might have witnessed or who might have footage of the incident to contact police. <\/p>\n
“I am particularly keen to trace a mother who was pushing a pram and walking with three young children before going into the Asda store,” Det Sgt Roper said. <\/p>\n
