{"id":158506,"date":"2025-11-02T08:54:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T08:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/158506\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T08:54:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T08:54:08","slug":"the-us-billionaire-who-made-ireland-his-home-from-home-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/158506\/","title":{"rendered":"The US billionaire who made Ireland his home-from-home \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the United States they call him the \u2018Cable Cowboy\u2019 and for many years he was reputed to be America\u2019s largest private landowner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But despite owning 2.2 million acres there, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-malone\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-malone\/\">John Malone<\/a> has made Ireland his home-from-home over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 84-year-old, who this week announced he was relinquishing his full-time board role at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/formula-one\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/formula-one\/\">Formula One<\/a> owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liberty-media\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/liberty-media\/\">Liberty Media<\/a> and at Liberty Global, the group behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/virgin-media\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/virgin-media\/\">Virgin Media<\/a>\u2019s Irish operation, is a frequent visitor to Humewood Castle in Co Wicklow. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an interview with The Irish Times in 2018, Malone estimated that he has spent about \u20ac300 million in the past decade on a portfolio of personal assets in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He bought Humewood in 2012 for a reported \u20ac7.2 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI actually do believe that there may be a genetic element in wanting to own the land you\u2019re on,\u201d he once said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/media-and-marketing\/i-love-the-place-us-billionaire-john-malone-on-his-300m-irish-portfolio-1.3578321\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018I love the place\u2019: US billionaire John Malone on his \u20ac300m Irish portfolioOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He followed up the Humewood purchase with that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/castlemartin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/castlemartin\/\">Castlemartin<\/a> estate in 2014. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sprawling 750-acre property in Co Kildare had belonged to the late Irish tycoon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tony-oreilly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tony-oreilly\/\">Tony O\u2019Reilly<\/a>. Sold on the instructions of AIB \u2013 to whom O\u2019Reilly owed millions of euro \u2013 it went for \u20ac28 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Malone makes regular visits to Humewood for stays during the summer months. His Irish assets extend much further than residential accommodation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As chairman of Liberty Global he pursued major business purchases here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The first was the cable provider UPC \u2013 later to become part of Virgin Media Ireland. Along the way, were two TV stations \u2013 first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tv3\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tv3\/\">TV3<\/a> in 2015 and then UTV Ireland in late 2016. The new TV entity was branded as Virgin Media Television. <\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"\" class=\"c-stack b-it-article-body__pullquote\" data-style-direction=\"vertical\" data-style-justification=\"start\" data-style-alignment=\"unset\" data-style-inline=\"false\" data-style-wrap=\"nowrap\">\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Malone controls both Formula One and Live Nation \u2013 the owner of global ticketing giant Ticketmaster. Speculation has focused on a potential disposal of shares in both businesses over the next two years<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His purchase and planned refurbishment of Humewood brought him into contact with John Lally and former stockbroker Paul Higgins. The two men played a role in its restoration and the trio went on to forge the MHL hotel partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group currently manages more than 2,300 beds around the country and lists among its portfolio the five-star Intercontinental in Ballsbridge, the College Green Hotel in Dublin city centre, the Powerscourt Hotel Resort and Spa in Enniskerry, Wicklow, and The Strand in Limerick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">What does Malone\u2019s taking of a back seat in Liberty mean for the businesses he founded and shepherded for so many decades?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Malone\u2019s transition to semi-retirement was \u201cwell telegraphed\u201d, according to American portfolio manager at Gamco Chris Marangi, and comes with a \u201crationalisation of assets\u201d that has been going on for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLiberty Global is already down the path of getting bigger or getting out of its primary markets,\u201d he says \u2013 pointing to the ongoing simplification of structures belonging to Malone\u2019s Liberty Live and Formula One businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Malone controls both Formula One and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/live-nation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/live-nation\/\">Live Nation<\/a> \u2013 the owner of global ticketing giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ticketmaster\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ticketmaster\/\">Ticketmaster<\/a>. Speculation has focused on a potential disposal of shares in both businesses over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe coming unwind of the Liberty Live [and] Formula One tracking stock structure simplifies the path to monetising each of those assets,\u201d Marangi said in reference to this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it was with cable TV that Malone made his name in the 1980s and 1990s \u2013 building out the cable network that first brought paid TV into the homes of millions of Americans \u2013 before going on to deliver the streaming services of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He helped bring together WarnerMedia and Discovery in 2022 \u2013 in recognition of the fact that streaming services are usurping traditional broadcasters \u2013 but was stymied in efforts to merge Warner with Rupert Murdoch\u2019s Fox due to perceived difficulties in having CNN and Fox News under the same umbrella.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Will the expected \u201csimplification\u201d of Liberty\u2019s assets be applied in Ireland? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speculation has swirled around Virgin Media Television for years. Part of the Virgin Media Ireland group that encompasses its broadband, TV and mobile phone businesses, the TV station in Ballymount, Dublin, is under pressure as advertising revenue has migrated to digital platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier this month, Malone dumped about half his stock in British broadcaster ITV.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Paul Farrell was vice-president of commercial at Virgin Media Ireland when Malone and the rest of his board came to Ireland in 2018. He says the collection of friends, acquaintances and business partners Malone had surrounded himself with were a \u201cfascinating bunch\u201d and Malone was \u201csharp and clued-in\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Farrell and the Virgin Media team presented Malone with the plan to rebrand TV3 as Virgin Media Television and to seek \u201csynergies\u201d between it and the broadband business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe feedback we got later was something along the lines that he was surprised it had taken us so long to try it,\u201d Farrell says. \u201cFor regulatory reasons in the United States he had been unable to do the same with his businesses there.
