{"id":159243,"date":"2025-11-02T19:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T19:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/159243\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T19:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T19:16:08","slug":"families-of-disappeared-during-troubles-lay-wreath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/159243\/","title":{"rendered":"Families of Disappeared during Troubles lay wreath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The families of the Disappeared have made an appeal for information that could help them recover their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>The Disappeared were a group of 17 people abducted, murdered, and secretly buried by republicans during the Troubles, mostly by the IRA.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen bodies have been recovered so far, with four outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>The families of the Disappeared gathered at Stormont for their annual commemoration.<\/p>\n<p>It includes a short walk and wreath laying on the steps of Stormont.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the disappearance of 19-year-old Columba McVeigh from Co Tyrone.<\/p>\n<p>A dig is taking place at present for his remains at Bragan Bog in Co Monaghan.<\/p>\n<p>His sister Dympna Kerr was among those at Stormont. &#8220;Columba is dead 50 years and is still lying in a bog,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That will never get easier, it can&#8217;t get any easier can it, until we find him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The families of the Disappeared have made an appeal for information that could help them recover their loved ones\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/002369e4-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe Independent Commission for the Location of Victims&#8217; Remains (ICLVR) is appealing for information<\/p>\n<p>Also there was a niece of Joe Lynskey, a former Cistercian monk who went on to join the IRA.<\/p>\n<p>He went missing in the summer of 1972.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024 the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims&#8217; Remains (ICLVR) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/ulster\/2024\/1126\/1483192-remains-monaghan-disappeared\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhumed a grave at Annyalla near Clontibret in a search for him.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>DNA testing later confirmed that remains recovered were not those of Joe Lynskey.<\/p>\n<p>A second search was undertaken in the same graveyard in May of this year during which further remains were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>They too were tested and proved not to be those of Mr Lynskey.<\/p>\n<p><b>Watch: Families of Disappeared during Troubles lay wreath<\/b><\/p>\n<p alt=\"Families of Disappeared during Troubles lay wreath\" data-embed=\"comcast-player\" data-guid=\"epic-mpx-manual-28835\" data-id=\"qeUbL9fKpGYi\">\n<p>Maria Lynskey said there had now been several unsuccessful digs for her uncle, but she would have fully expected that he would have been found in Monaghan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had everything arranged for Joe, funeral, undertaker, priests because everybody was positive, not just myself,&#8221;
